The Reclamation / Myth as Method
Illustrated poster
/
Exhibited at @ifsa.2026 , illustration and folklore South Asia symposium 2026 at @habibuniversity
/
This illustrated poster explores Indo-Persian myth not just as heritage, but as an active pedagogical resource within art and design education. Focusing on the visual semiotics of Persianate manuscript traditions across South Asia, this piece examines how mythic iconography historically encoded ethical, ecological, and communal knowledge through visual symbolism.

The poster is situated within the larger context of my MA in Art Education thesis, in which i am exploring similar themes, building upon the visual semiotics and symbolism of Indo-Persian mythologies and their relevance to Pakistan. It argues that contemporary visual culture in Pakistan is increasingly shaped by ‘imported’ aesthetic and ideological frameworks, resulting in the gradual erasure of indigenous symbolic systems, and proposes the reclamation of indo-persian folklore as a decolonial pedagogical method.

Once upon a time is an illustrated book, created as part of “Folk Stories: Cultural Revival” — a VCD BNU–SVAD and BSS collaborative academic project.

Led by Ms. Duaa Kundi as Head Illustrator and Managed by Ms. Umaima Mohsin, This project sought to visually interpret oral folk stories collected by BSS students and educators, that were illustrated by selected BNU–SVAD students, and compiled into a culturally significant storybook. This project took place over the summer of 2025, and not only aimed to bridge storytelling, heritage preservation, and visual design through student-led creative practice, but also to represent the milestone of the 50 year anniversary of BSS.

the publication features the work of the following students:

Syed Asad Salman - @artsyrants
Fayeqa Munir - @fayeqa.wip
Maham Shahid - @yu_is_blind
Ashmil Kainat Qazi - @idkashmil
Natasha Ali Abro - @nayshahaha_
Marvi Jawed - @marvijawed
Fatima Shehzadi Babri - @shehzadi_studios

Project lead & Head Illustrator: Ms. Duaa Khan Kundi - @duaakundi
Project Managed by: Ms. Umaima Mohsin - @maima0498

some of my favourite photographs from august in Hunza - I think my absolute favourite it the picture of Diran Peak.

/

I’ve realised I really miss photography, and not as documenting my day or random cute moments, but photography in the way I used to do it. Here’s to hoping I try to bring it back even if slightly.
