Light & Shadow Play #1
I often walk past this patch of wall in my living room and see the image of the window from high up in the atrium space “painted” on the textured sheetrock beneath the open staircase. Usually, I see it when the sun’s position cuts the image off with the stairs at left or the alcove wall edge to the right. This morning, it was almost perfectly framed between the two, leaving just enough shadow along the right edge to match the soft framing to the left, top, and bottom. I lived the moment, grabbing my camera to catch a few perspectives of this image created by the sun passing by on its daily route.

The ordinary can be much more extraordinary if we take time to see it in the present. See it. Feel it. Before it is gone.

Not all enlightenment happens in exotic mountain retreats. It happens when we focus in the moment we exist. We see what surrounds us. Recognize what matters. Remember who we are. Ignore what we think others wish us to be. Stay centered in our authentic selves, and look at what’s happening out our back door.

“X” marks the spot. Shift your position Tilt your perspective. Adjust your composition to a new framing. You just might learn a new way of seeing, thinking, and feeling.

I saved the classic American hot rods for last. There is something special about hot rods in American car culture. They almost always start with a rusty old hulk that somebody gave up all hope on. They get transformed gradually in the garage, driveway, or backyard on the weekends and after work. Lots of hard, dirty labor removing rust and chipped old paint, straightening dinged and crushed sheet metal, and chopping up the stock frames and bodies to creep closer to the vision in the mind of the builder. Many thanks to the Goombah’s Car Club for putting this annual car show on the streets of Willow Glen. It gives everyone a chance to see and appreciate the labor of love so many car enthusiasts have for their old (and not so old) cars and trucks.

This classic hot rod is a tribute to the days when the flame job was king in hot rod paint schemes.

I close my posts from the 2026 Goombah’s Car Club show with this velvety blue beauty of a hot rod. The matte finish gave it the soft, velvety look you see here. It certainly wasn’t added by me or nasty AI apps in post processing. Human-created art on wheels.

This right-hand drive Skyline GT-R is a classic import because Nissan didn’t sell this generation of the GT-R here in the USA. Lots of us wished they had, though. I was surprised and pleased to see it in Willow Glen at the Goombah’s Car Club show.

This 911 GT3 RS is an impressive machine, but it did look a bit out of sorts amidst the 1950s and 1960s American muscle cars surrounding it at the Goombah’s Car Club show.

OK. I’ll admit it. I’ve never been much of a Mopar fan. One of the Big Three American auto manufacturers from the ‘60s - ‘80s. In its heyday, Mopar brands included Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth. They later swallowed up AMC and Jeep. Mopar fans are out there, though, and they are enthusiastic. This pair of Mopar cars at the Goombah’s Car Club show caught my eye as a contrast between the modern and the 1970s versions of Mopar muscle cars side-by-side.

The Plymouth Duster was built as the 2-door coupe version of the 4-door Valiant from 1969 to 1976 in what passed for the “compact” car segment of the early 1970s US auto market. It competed against the Ford Maverick and Chevy Nova, and Chrysler tried to sell it against the subcompact market VW Beetle and Chevy Vega. It is rare to see a Duster still driving around 50 years later, and this one is obviously a survivor that hasn’t seen much restoration.

The beautiful restomod in this photo identifies as a Chevrolet on the outside, but the open hood reveals an unusual Mopar heart powering this beast. It is not uncommon for restomods of one make to be powered by a much more modern engine from another brand, but it is usually GM LS engines going into those other brands, followed by Ford crate engines. A Mopar engine swap is rare, indeed.
