Saw these Japan-only compilations at Real Groovy and grabbed one. Apparently they were compiled by a Japanese music journalist named Yutaka Sakuri, back in 1979. He was a big soul fan. The track selection is the lesser known Stax artist mostly, some great cuts in there like Veda Brown, or Jeanne and the Darlings. Extensive liner notes, lyrics and discography for each artist. Went for a train ride this morning, it was freaking cool. It felt novel to ride a train underground in my own city. I rode the escalator at K rd station (Pitt st entrance/exit), it’s the longest escalator in NZ. I designed and had these badges made, and gave a bunch of them away to kids at the station, they went down a treat, even gave one to my local MP, @chloe.swarbrick. I recently discovered music photographer Bob Gruen wrote an autobiography in 2020 and of course the wonderful Auckland public library had a copy. I knew he took some amazing photos of the likes of John and Yoko, The Clash and others, but he was also into video cameras. He got one of the first portable ones in 1971 and started filming shows, including Ike and Tina Turner. They saw the footage and liked it, so Ike gave him some money to buy a movie camera and sound recorder. He didn’t know you needed to use a clapper board for sound sync, so the Ike and Tina footage went unreleased til 2013 - it’s on YouTube. Also has a lot of offstage scenes, like Tina at home with the kids. He also shot albums covers for them, and Labelle - he was good friends with their manager Vicki Wickham. by @dubdotdash

Went to the ribbon cutting and sneak peek at the new train station on Wellesley st, it’s ridiculously cool. Have been watching it get built for the last 9 years. Gonna make getting round the city way easier. And it doubles the number of people within 30 minutes from the inner city. If you don’t believe this is transformational, I have a motorway I can sell you. by @dubdotdash

Great local release from @romi.wrights on @manuka.recordings, and the @thewomacksisters with backing from members of the Dapkings. Get the Romi album off Manuka Recordings website (cheaper than bandcamp),
And @southbound.records have the Womack sisters wax. Both essential. by @dubdotdash

New public art alert! This cool wahine is outside the Victoria st station exit, giving a karakia/welcome to people coming into the city. The eel is down further, by where Horotiu stream used to run thru the middle of town. Look at the ripples carved into the footpath. So awesome. by @dubdotdash

Went to mt Albert record fair yesterday, good to see my record peeps! Scored a bunch of Cabaret Voltaire, Fats Comet (members of Tackhead), and some other goodies for cheap. Yay! by @dubdotdash

Today I’m standing on a beach on a pacific island. It’s my birthday! Hooray for me. (If you are reading this in nz, technically yesterday was my birthday thanks to the intl dateline. Help me celebrate it twice. Go on.) Also, it’s 21 degrees. by @dubdotdash
