Dear May,

May, May, May... you brought me so much happiness. I started this month feeling joyful—every day was something to look forward to. I was celebrating life, the people around me, and the small moments in between. But little did I know, God had something else planned for me.

I still remember that Monday morning like it was yesterday. There are so many things I wish I hadn’t done—just to avoid seeing that message. I wish I hadn’t opened WhatsApp. I wish I hadn’t picked up my phone first thing. I wish I hadn’t gone into the cousins’ group chat. Maybe then, my Monday would have gone differently. Maybe it wouldn’t have changed the truth, but at least it would have delayed the pain. Grandpa was gone.

As the days have passed, I’ve found myself writing more—penning and typing out my emotions and sending them to my sisters. It helps a little. But I know this grief will take time. It feels different. People close to me have passed before, but this one hit me in a way I can’t explain.

Every day, I wake up and put a brave smile on my face—not because I’m not hurting, but because I refuse to let my pain define me. Smiling helps. Listening to Christian music helps too. I cry early in the morning, then I wipe my tears and start my day.

One thing I’m forever grateful to God for is that He granted my grandfather’s greatest wish—to live to 100. Not just to reach 100, but to do so in good health, with strength, wisdom, and a heart fully devoted to God. He served faithfully until his last breath. And for that, I say: thank you, God.

And now, my prayer to God is simple: I ask Him to make my grandfather my personal guardian angel. To let him watch over me and guide me from heaven. Because I’ve watched that man’s life since I was small—it was like an open book. And through it all, he remained pure. Very pure. A life of integrity, humility, and deep faith. If anyone is worthy to watch over me, it’s him.

So May, thank you—for the joy, the love, the kindness, and even the heartbreak. I’m still grateful. by @duchessdukee_
