Meet the founding duo behind Duet Design Studio.

We're Lindsey and Shanda—friends since design school, partners in transforming homes for over 13 years.

Our philosophy? Homes should work as beautifully as they look. We design for real life: kitchens that handle weeknight chaos, living rooms built for actual living, spaces that feel collected and effortless.

Based in Richmond, serving clients throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and beyond. Specializing in full-scale renovations and new construction for homeowners who value thoughtful design at every stage—from construction drawings to the last detail.

That little chair has absolutely no interest in matching the dresser. We respect that.

The reeded wood brings rhythm, the gilt brings warmth, and the black chair picks up the door so your eye has somewhere to travel.

Everyone has a job. Even the branch, which apparently applied for a senior position.

A very Duet kind of welcome.

It’s been awhile since we’ve done one of these, so let’s catch up, shall we?

School’s in, summer’s out - and before we slip into holiday-weekend mode, here’s a little peek at some of the fun that kept us busy all summer. ✨

It was not just her talent that made her so beloved, but the example she set through the way she lived. Humble and kind. Funny and gracious. Unapologetically herself.

What an extraordinary legacy to leave behind.

In an era that feels increasingly loud, divided, and eager to prove who is right, I selfishly wish Dolly had been given more time on this earth to continue shining her incredible light.

The world just feels dimmer without her.
Please rest in peace, our dear, sweet Dolly 🤍 by @duetstudiointeriors

FIELD NOTES // 001 Atalaya Castle, Murrells
Inlet, SC

What fascinated us most about Atalaya wasn’t just what we could see - it was everything we couldn’t.

There are no known photographs of how the Huntingtons actually lived within these walls or how they furnished and decorated their home. Of course, in the 1930s, people weren’t photographing every corner of their house the way we do today.

As it stands now, the architecture feels almost mysterious.
Beautiful, yes - but also a bit stark, even institutional at times.
We couldn’t help but imagine what it might have felt like when it was alive with the people who called it home.

Perhaps that’s what drew us in so deeply. Not just the architecture itself, but the invitation to imagine the stories, the rituals, and the quiet moments that once unfolded within these walls.

I love the story these images tell. They’re not the polished “after” photos everyone expects - they’re the messy, exciting middle where all of the craftsmanship and decision-making starts paying off.

From tile installs and finished millwork details, to cabinet color approvals and finalized furnishing plans - we got to celebrate progress on SEVEN of our projects this week. (Not gonna lie, just thinking about this past week makes me tired!)

So yes...it finally feels okay to step away for a few days and take a much-needed vacay.

(At least for the person sharing this post! 😉)

We got to visit our Williamsburg project today - spent time finalizing outlet and switch locations while reviewing the prettiest paint colors and materials for final approval.
It’s always exciting to watch the vision become more tangible as each decision brings the home one step closer to life.

We’ve had the privilege of helping our clients breathe new life into this historic home as they make the move from Northern Virginia to one of Williamsburg’s most beloved neighborhoods. They’re trading the bustle for walkable streets, welcoming neighbors, local shops and restaurants, and a storybook home that’s ready to begin its next chapter.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t say how excited we are to share more of this transformation with you. We have a feeling this one is going to be something truly special. ❤️

Inspired by the romance of old coastal cottages, we set out to create something that feels as though it’s always belonged.

A new home with an old soul.

A place for grandparents, cousins, lifelong friends, and summers spent together. Morning bike rides for coffee. Toes in the sand. Porch dinners that linger well past sunset.

Not just a beautiful house, but a place that quietly becomes part of a family’s story.

These are the homes we’re most inspired to create. ❤️

Designers spend years perfecting a kitchen.
Families spend approximately seven minutes making it look lived in.

We prefer the latter. 😉

Happiest June 1st, y’all!

Transitioning into summer with a palette that feels
like terracotta tile, shell collections, old brass hardware, iced coffee, and books left open, face-down somewhere near the beach.

We’ve been especially inspired by:
vintage motel key tags, striped umbrellas, botanical greens, tobacco-stained woods, tiny floral prints wrinkled linen, imperfect marble, and anything that looks slightly sun-faded.

Studio soundtrack lately :

When the Night is Over : Lord Huron
Dry Spell : Kasey Musgraves
November Was White : Oohs & Aahs
The Way We Get By : Spoon
Dancing in the Flames : The Weeknd
White Horses : Wolf Alice
Party : Goldie Boutilier
Starlight : Canons
Dracula : Tame Impala

There’s something deeply comforting about a home that doesn’t need to announce itself.

For Woodlawn Road, we leaned into restraint - warm whites, layered textures, softened edges, and details quiet enough to feel discovered rather than designed.

A tailored Roman shade, a generous farmhouse sink.
Aged brass catching afternoon light, and cabinetry drawn with just enough traditional detail to feel familiar, but never formal.

We kept returning to one question throughout this renovation:
How do we make the house feel lighter, calmer, and more lived-in without losing its soul?

The answer was never one big gesture.
It was a hundred small decisions made carefully. 🌿
