Last but not least, here is our final stop: Stahleck Castle near Bacherach. This marks the end of our impressive ‘Romantic Plein Air’ painting trip, which Bernd Weber organised for our small group. I chose a section of the castle grounds to paint. Once again, we were very lucky with the weather.

Plein air painting always holds surprises! This castle houses a youth hostel. We’d set up our easels on the viewing platform and started painting when suddenly a large group of schoolchildren appeared on the terrace, jumping around us and making a hell of a racket. The peace and quiet was gone. Some of them, however, were curious and quite interested, looked at our paintings and even asked us a few questions.

After a final drink, we – Bernd, Susan, Ute and Ilkar – said our goodbyes and headed home in different directions, taking with us lots of lovely new impressions and our fresh oil paintings. Thank you very much, Bernd, for organizing this event. Those were brilliant days with you and everyone else!

I finished painting the picture afterwards, as I’d run out of time. I’ve decided to do a few practice exercises soon to improve my speed.

On the afternoon of the third day of our Rhine trip with Bernd Weber (#berndweber.art), we stopped off at the ancient wine-growing village of Bacherach. We walked to a very romantic spot in the narrow streets called ‘Malerwinkel’. This corner inspired me to paint the half-timbered houses, slate roofs, old watchtower and the vineyards, which glowed in the golden autumn sun.

On the third day of our plein air painting trip along the Rhine, we planned to paint this magnificent castle. It is the Pfalzgrafenburg near Kaub. I chose an panoramic format for it. Once again, I didn’t have enough time to paint this subject. The group was already waiting for me during the lunch break in the next village. I then finished the painting late in the evening back at my accommodation. Although it was no longer strictly a plein air painting, I was quite satisfied with the result.

So viele Details!

View of the Rhine and Oberwesel. On the afternoon of the second day of our Rhine plein air trip, we drove up to the Günderodehaus, a lovely country inn with a fantastic view of the Rhine Valley. The sun was shining and we struggled to find a shady spot. I decided to paint the view down into the valley, which was a bit daring – or perhaps even a bit overconfident. So many details!

Here, too, we were once again following the footsteps of William Turner. Circular bronze plaques mark Turner’s ‘vantage point’ from more than 200 years ago. It was a wonderful feeling to be able to follow in his footsteps.
I didn’t quite manage to finish the complex painting and carried on working on it at home.

Before and after painting, we had a drink and a bite to eat on the nice terrace of the Günderode restaurant. Together with Bernd Weber, Susan Hub, Ute Thalheim and Britta Genehr – who’d travelled all the way from Etville especially for the day – we thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful afternoon in the October sunshine.

On the second day of our Romantic Rhine travel we drove up to St Martin’s Church in Oberwesel. There was a lot of fog in the Rhine Valley that morning, so we couldn’t paint the view of the Rhine. That’s why I decided to paint the little brick building instead. I didn’t manage to finish it whilst I was there, so I completed it later. Perhaps that’s why the colours differ so much from the original. I much prefer to finish my paintings right on the spot.

On the afternoon of the first day of our romantic plein air painting trip, we drove up to ‘Maria Ruh’ near Urbar. From there, we had a wonderful view down over the Rhine Valley. For some reason, I couldn’t quite decide – whether to focus on the area to the right or left of the tree – so unfortunately the tree ended up in the centre and I had great difficulty making it work as a picture.

During my Rhine tour in early October with Bernd, Susan, Ilgar and Uta, I didn’t get round to posting my pictures. I was far too absorbed in the painting, the landscape and the group. I’ll just make up for that now.

Plein air painting on the Rhine! I accepted Bernd Weber’s (@berndweber.art) invitation to spend a few days painting with him and others on the Rhine. What a treat! It was a bit misty in the morning, but later it cleared up and the sun came out. Here, I painted looking north from St. Goar.

Jetzt also Aquarell!

Apples, pears and borage blossom. On the 5. day, I’d chosen the workshop with Anna Khodorovich (#annakhodorovich) at the Willingshäuser Symposium. Anna born in Russia has been living in Amsterdam for many years.

The fact that I’d ended up on a watercolour course was a slight mistake on my part. I’d actually intended to choose only courses where I could paint in oils. So now it was watercolour unexpectedly. I haven’t painted in watercolour for years.
First, we were asked to sketch something in the large, beautiful garden a plant, a flower, an animal or something similar. We were then to ask to combine the drawings into a composition and paint it in watercolour. The four hours just flew by. After days spent painting in oils, the drawing and watercolour painting were really lovely and relaxing. There’s something light, almost meditative, about watercolour painting. Thank you, Anna, for this lovely workshop!... and once again, there was delicious cake and coffee provided by the lovely ladies of the village!

Day 3: Plein air painting in North Hesse, out in the pale yellow / light ochre-coloured wheat fields near Wilingshausen. This time I took part in a workshop with artist Gavan McCullough @gavanmccullough from Ireland. Once again, we had absolutely perfect weather for painting. A light breeze was blowing across the fields, so it wasn’t too hot. You could have painted in any direction there. Not a spectacular landscape, but so many subjects to choose from. I painted the view of the village of Wasenberg with the ‘Wasenberg Cathedral’.

Dorfgasse in Willingshausen.

Village Lane in Willingshausen. On the 5. day of the artists’ symposium, I took part in a workshop led by Berlin-based artist Christin Lutze. We set up our easels in the centre of the village to paint a scene using perspective. I chose this alley and, fortunately, found myself standing in partial shade on that very hot afternoon.

Later I discovered that almost the exact same perspective had been painted in 1825 (see 3. picture) by artist Gerhardt von Reutern, the founder of the Willingshausen artists’ colony. The village looked a little different back then, but at least the beautiful half-timbered houses are still at the same place, even if some of them are rather crooked.

Gerhardt von Reutern (1794–1865) was a very interesting figure. In Willingshausen there is a lovely little museum, the ‘Malerstübchen’, in the Gerhardt-von-Reutern House, where you find information about the history of the artists’ colony and a room furnished with old furniture and paintings from those days.

Summer meadow near Willingshausen. Painted in my spare time at the Willingshausen Painting Symposium. I was captivated by the white wildflowers swaying in the wind which I choose than to paint. It was quite windy and it got increasingly hot around midday. At the start, I’d put up an umbrella. However, because of the gusts of wind, I soon abandoned that idea, as it kept blowing over. So I carried on painting until the intense heat forced me to take shelter. This is probably why the painting got a bit wild.

2. Tag, 2 Workshop in Willingshausen.

Day 2, 2nd workshop in Willingshausen. This time with the Canadian artist Andrew Judd #andrewjudd. We set up our easels in a corner of the village and Andrew showed us how to make colours really pop by surrounding them with grey or their complementary colour. I tried this in my painting featuring the orange bin and the dark green of the bushes next to it. As I wasn’t entirely happy with the painting, I worked on it a bit more afterwards until I felt happy with it.
