Made this one weekend two Octobers back. Making these pieces is always a funny process because I never quite know what I’m gonna get. For 95% of the process, I’m working blind, just moving things around on the ground where they don’t look like much. Then when I think I’m close, I’ll fly the drone and either be really disappointed or pleasantly surprised at how it looks from above.

I’ll keep working until I have everything right where I want it, and then I’ll do a final photo shoot. Even if it doesn’t turn out amazing, I got to spend a weekend in the wild, and I can’t complain about that.

Shoutout to my mom for making me pick up sticks in the yard after every windstorm or tornado that came through our neighborhood. Those skills are really paying off.

Some scenes from IceWorks, a piece I made a few summers ago here in the mountains in Idaho.

It was around the 4th of July and I wasn’t going to send off fireworks in the alpine but I could make 48 snow chunks and arrange them like a waving flag in an alpine meadow and fly a drone to take a picture of them from above. So that’s what I did. You can tell where I started and where I ended because the chunks I made and placed first were doing a lot of melting while I kept making the others. I like the performance aspect that comes with working with snow in the summer - I have to work fast and there’s no time to second guess the concept. What I did second guess was not bringing my ski mittens.

One of the things I like about land art is creating order out of chaos. I’m often taking a random pile of things and rearranging them into a less random pile of things. The composition for One Otter’s Trash was inspired by the patterning on the mussel shells. Can you see it?

The otter did most of the work.

In the summer of 2023, this rock outcropping on Lake Huron was a favorite dining spot for a local otter, who discarded his freshwater mussel shells in big piles in the shallow water just off the shore. I appreciated his help in collecting the materials and decided to use them in my next piece of land art. My favorite collaboration to date.

Big week for me - I installed the first-ever show of my land art!

I've been working away in the wilderness building this body of work over the past 4 years and am so excited for it to be seen by some other eyes besides mine. The pieces are up on the wall at Dawson Taylor, a local coffee shop here in downtown Boise. I'm also planning on sharing each of the pieces here in the days (read: months) to come.
