The 10 Percent

Years ago. In the boss's office. DOUG walks in one afternoon, waving the results of a recent survey.

DOUG

"I can see how opinion is split on this issue. It's a biggie, ERNIE.

"But 10 percent of the people say they have no opinion.

"How can that be?!?"

ERNIE

"DOUG...10 percent of the people don't know what day it is."

Well, that 10 percent all found my INSTAGRAM account. And leave comments. taken in Louisville, Kentucky by @dug909

SHAMEKA on public use of hard drugs

[NOTE: This is the first of a two-part post.]

Public drug use is both a public health challenge and a concern for the safety and usability of shared public spaces. We need a response that meets both needs.

Louisville has many organizations already doing this work, and metro government should coordinate with them far better. We also have a strong Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness along with public health professionals who have given us studies, plans and data showing what local government can do.

As mayor, I’ll take those plans off the shelf, make sure they have the resources to succeed, and put them to work in every community facing these challenges.

Substance use, mental health needs, homelessness and trauma are interconnected. They compound one another and, therefore, need a multifaceted response:

• Low-barrier treatment
• Medications for opioid-use disorder
• Harm reduction
• Pre-existing and immune-compromising conditions
• Overdose prevention
• Mental health care
• Housing and ongoing support

This is why we can’t police our way out of this. We must meet people where they are and connect them with resources when they’re ready.

Aggressive encampment clearings and treating substance use as the sole cause of homelessness are part of the problem. Sweeping people away, forced treatment and incarceration don’t replace the programs and care people need. As mayor, I’ll focus on keeping public spaces safe while working with people and community organizations to provide real paths to stability.

✊️✊️✊️END HOMELESSNESS✊️✊️✊️

Louisville currently has a mayor unwilling or unable to follow in Denver's successful footsteps. (See link below.) He can't or won't...

1. Add the affordable housing we need in order to get people off the streets and better able to receive the help they need to get their lives together. Mayor Greenberg is way behind the goal he promised when he was elected. Instead, he has added even more posh hotel rooms and a hyperscale data center that nobody wants.

2. De-militarize the police and deploy them when appropriate with social workers and other service providers for a more compassionate, effective approach to homelessness, public drug use, and mental illness.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/13/opinion/homelessness-unhoused-denver-shelters.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

We need...

o A mayor more focused on making life more affordable for all of us.
o A mayor who's more accountable and transparent.
o A mayor who has proven themselves to care more about working families than about moneyed interests and corporate donors.
o A mayor willing to stand up to the powerful interests who hold Louisville back. Hold us back from being the safe, affordable, caring, loving, welcoming, diverse, and sustainable city we can be.

We need to elect @shamekaformayor.

SHAMEKA: ABOUT JOBS

I see creating jobs and economic opportunity differently than other mayors. I see creating jobs as healthcare. As family care.

Jobs – good jobs - mean people having an affordable place to live, feeling safe, and building a stable future…instead of being stressed out, priced out and left behind.

Here are values that will guide me as mayor in creating jobs and keeping people employed – everywhere in Louisville and Jefferson County.

• I want partners who give more than they take. Too many businesses and economic development projects take more than they give to people. I want jobs that support and add to our neighborhoods and schools and parks and roads and transit and other resources that matter.

• I want partners who think local. Whether it’s a corner mom-and-pop or a global giant or a not-for-profit, it’s important to have and to support employers with roots in our communities. Who give. Who make life more affordable, not less. Right here in Louisville.

• I want partners who listen hard and work for the people. That means being engaged, transparent, accountable, and accessible. Partners willing to have conversations – including and especially the difficult ones – and not walk away.

• I want partners who treat people right. With dignity. That means paying people fair wages and providing good benefits. It means supporting unions and working people, small businesses, and local jobs. It means expanding ways for young people to work and to make a safe and healthy life for themselves and their families…right here in Louisville.

These are some of the ways I will be a jobs partner in the mayor’s office. Take a look at shamekaforlouisville.com for other ways I’ll be a mayor who partners.

💵💵DATA CENTER GREED💵💵💵

Bret Stephens: "...[T]here is bipartisan opposition to an industry that promises to re-industrialize many of these same places.

Frank Bruni: "But to re-industrialize them in a highly obnoxious way. To a certain degree, the data center opposition is NIMBYism for the digital age. But it also goes far beyond that, because the centers are mirrors and vessels of so many anxieties, so much bitterness. They’re reminders of how many tech titans far from these communities are accruing more and more wealth that’s not shared, so they’re symbols of the country’s gross — and, I think, unsustainable — economic inequalities.

"They create enormous electricity demands at precisely the time when the Trump administration is turning its back on alternative sources of energy — a decision, by the way, that’s clearly going to leave us far behind international competitors in that technology race and that market. All in all, it’s hard to look at a hulking data center on the side of a road near you and feel a tingle about the glories of progress."

CORRECTION

I was just informed that BEN RENO-WEBER went on record, as follows...

"I think we are still very much learning what it would mean to have data centers of any kind here, and so I do not support their construction until we understand all of the implications and make smart policy."

-- The Courier-Journal

DATA CENTER ENABLER?

BEN RENO-WEBER has apparently not taken a position regarding the Steve Poe-@mayorcraiggreenberg data center on Camp Ground Road!

His silence is deafening.

Thanks, @thelouisvillecardinal for conducting a forum for the city's mayoral candidates, Wednesday, September 23. @craiggreenberglouisville was a no show.* But @shamekaformayor laid out her position on four key issues...

1. PUBLIC #TRANSIT. She will expand routes to better serve students, elderly, and working people...instead of eliminating routes.

2. LIBRARIES. #Shameka personally knows the importance of neighborhood libraries. She'll be a passionate advocate.

3. POLICE INVOLVEMENT. Shameka will make #police more accountable, make Louisville a #sanctuary city again, and address overuse of #gunviolence and excessive force.

4. FLOCK CAMERAS. She will safeguard against the abuses of Flock technology. Unlike Craig Greenberg, who embraces Flock cameras...despite their threat to privacy.

Here's a link to The Cardinal's coverage.

BAD WRONG ☹️☹️☹️

I get it. This fella and other police believe they're under siege. Warriors battling an enemy.

You've seen this, too. Right?

Quick to escalate. #Guns drawn. Stand your ground. Shoot first. Ask questions later.

I know this case is being adjudicated. And that the #Louisville #police chief fired the officer.

Nevertheless, we never seem to wrestle with the root causes of the use of excessive force by police. Particularly against Black and brown and poor and homeless people. Hearts and prayers and codes of conduct and accountability processes don't appear to be getting the job done, do they?!?

Our lawmakers have blood on their hands, too. The #Kentucky #legislature has made it illegal to be poor and homeless. And where's our mayor in this debacle!?!

LISTENING 👂

You and I have probably been in public meetings where there are tense disagreements. Maybe voices get raised. It’s in the nature of public discourse.

The June 17, 2026, meeting of the Air Pollution Control District was such a meeting. During the public comments period, #Louisville Deputy Mayor Nicole George turned off the public comment microphones and left the meeting, describing community members as "abusive."

Here’s what #Shameka Parrish-Wright said about this public official’s behavior…

“I found this deeply disappointing.

“Public service requires listening, especially when conversations are difficult. I take that responsibility seriously. If I disagree with residents, I still believe they deserve to be heard with dignity and respect.

“As Mayor, I would stay, listen, and work alongside the community to develop solutions that address concerns. I also expect my staff to approach conflict the same way.

“We don't avoid difficult conversations. We lean into them because that's where trust is built and better solutions emerge.

“I am formally trained in conflict resolution and de-escalation, and those principles guide my leadership.”

Shameka Parrish-Wright will be a #mayor who listens, even when things get hot. Same with her team. Her record backs this up. See for yourself at shamekaforlouisville.com.
