Launch II is a little different.

When PROGRESSION opened, each photographer presented two works — two distinct points in their practice, placed in conversation with one another.

For this launch, each artist will introduce a third photograph.

A new work created during the course of the exhibition, adding another perspective to the story already being told through their first two pieces.

Together, the three photographs form a fuller picture of each artist’s progression — what has shaped their work, where their practice stands now, and what they are choosing to make next.

Featuring:

Tatianna Alexxus — @alexxuslens
Venus Wright — @itz_justvee
Kori Ajee Dobbs — @koriajee_
Nailah Jackson — @nailahjphotography
Davia Gross — @daviamg.photography
Adriana Jones-Villa — @only111nana

DUHTROIT HAS A NEW HOME.

We’re excited to officially announce the opening of DUHTROIT’s new headquarters in Metro Detroit.

Our new home is a dedicated space for the planning, production, administration, and development of DUHTROIT’s growing body of work.

Exhibitions. Publications. Artist development. Cultural programming. Creative investment.

A lot has been built without having a place to call our own.

Now we have one.

Welcome to DUHTROIT® HQ. by @duhtroit_

IT’S OFFICIAL. DUHTROIT® is TRADEMARKED

Today marks another important milestone in the evolution of DUHTROIT.

When we started, the focus was simple: create meaningful opportunities for artists and produce work that deserved to exist.

But with every exhibition, publication, partnership, program, and person who has trusted us with their work, DUHTROIT has become responsible for something bigger than any single project.

A reputation. A body of work. A history. And increasingly, a legacy.

That deserves to be protected.

We’re proud to share that DUHTROIT has received its first federal trademark registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

For us, this isn’t about putting an ® next to the logo. It’s another piece of the infrastructure required to build DUHTROIT with intention, and to ensure that the artists, collaborators, partners, and communities who lend their names, work, and trust to this platform are contributing to something built with the future in mind.

Huge thank you to Beverly Beal @beverlyabeal @beverlybeallaw , our trademark attorney, for her guidance, expertise, and support in helping us reach this milestone.

There is much more to build.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be joining the Nigerian Students Association @ngsawsu at Wayne State University @waynestate as a featured panelist for their 4th Annual NSA Conference, taking place Saturday, October 17th!

This year’s theme, “Rooted in Heritage. Driven by Excellence. United for Impact,” brings together conversations around culture, leadership, professional development, and the opportunities available to the next generation of Nigerian students and young professionals.

As someone of Nigerian heritage and a Wayne State University alumnus, this is an especially meaningful opportunity to return to my alma mater and contribute to conversations about turning our education, experiences, and ambitions into meaningful impact.

I’m looking forward to connecting with students, fellow professionals, and members of the Nigerian community!

DUHTROIT at SCAD | Savannah, Georgia

This week, DUHTROIT returned to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) @scaddotedu to speak with three BUSINESS 110 classes about creative entrepreneurship and navigating the professional world as a creative.

Led by our Founder & President, Justice Oshiyoye, the sessions explored DUHTROIT’s history and development, building and scaling a creative organization, creative freelancing, professional collaboration, and developing independent creative initiatives.

We also took a closer look at several DUHTROIT projects, including:

• PROGRESSION: A Black Woman’s Vision
• Black Women with Cameras
• Little Liberia: Roots & Renaissance
• Detroit Women in Design

Through these projects, we discussed the practical experiences, challenges, and considerations involved in developing and executing creative initiatives.

We also brought a little bit of Detroit with us!

To connect these conversations to real-world practice, we shared four professional resources developed by creatives from the DUHTROIT community:

• Venus Wright @itz_justvee — Website Portfolio
• Nailah Jackson @nailahjphotography — Creative CV
• Dom Porter @dom.partworks — Visual Resume
• Tatianna Alexxus @alexxuslens — Pitch Deck

These resources served as examples of how creatives can present their work, communicate their experience, pursue opportunities, and position themselves professionally.

PROGRESSION served as an in-depth case study, allowing us to walk students through the process of bringing a creative initiative from concept to execution. We examined project development, production planning, partnerships, team coordination, artist development, and the operational decisions involved in delivering a multidisciplinary exhibition and professional development experience.

We’re grateful to SCAD for welcoming us back and providing another opportunity to share our experiences, lessons, and the work of Detroit’s creative community with the next generation of creative professionals.

This post serves as the official project credit record for PROGRESSION: A Black Woman’s Vision.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the work possible.

Meet the Visiting Advisors of PROGRESSION: A Black Woman’s Vision.

Throughout the project, our featured photographers were given opportunities to learn directly from experienced professionals who could help them think more intentionally about their work, careers, and place within the arts.

We’re proud to recognize and thank our three Visiting Advisors:

Amanda J. Cain @amandajcain — Detroit Pistons Team Photographer, who led individual portfolio reviews with the photographers, offering direct feedback on their bodies of work, presentation, and creative development.

Henry Harper @henryc.harper — Founder of the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club @detroitfineartsbreakfastclub and Harper Gallery of Art & Interiors @harpergoaai , who led a pricing workshop focused on understanding the value of their work, positioning photography as fine art, and navigating the business of being a serious practicing artist.

Dr. Jeanne Hunter-Moore @jarthumanity — Co-Founder and Gallery Director of Office Space Gallery @officespace_mosaic and art professor, who provided one-on-one gallery readiness and career consultations, helping photographers think about their professional development and how to position themselves for opportunities beyond the exhibition.

Each advisor brought a different perspective to the project—portfolio development, the business and value of art, and long-term career and gallery readiness.

Thank you Amanda, Henry, and Dr. Hunter-Moore for sharing your time, experience, and knowledge with the photographers of PROGRESSION. Your involvement helped us make professional development a meaningful part of the exhibition experience.

This week, DUHTROIT returns to SCAD @scaddotedu as our founder, Justice Oshiyoye, speaks with business classes about creative entrepreneurship and navigating the professional field as a creative freelancer.

We’ll be reviewing both sides of the coin — what it takes to build and manage creative initiatives from an organizational perspective, and what creatives need to understand when navigating opportunities, partnerships, expectations, and their own professional development.

We’re excited to use PROGRESSION: A Black Woman’s Vision and Black Women with Cameras as signature DUHTROIT case studies to bring those conversations to life.

I’m beyond grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful exhibition experience.
I say experience because this wasn’t just a normal drop off your work, come to the opening reception, closing reception, pick up your work kind of exhibition.
This exhibition was a challenge it was about more than how does your work look?
I was in a space where I questioned my why and my vision. It felt like they wanted more than just pictures. They wanted a picture of the beginning of my photography journey and a current one to see growth. During the exhibition run we had workshops and had to create a third image to show progress. I learned so much from these different workshops more than just for my photo work itself, but as an artist. I learned about selling my work, pricing my work, growing my portfolio, printing, framing, vocabulary, exhibiting my work, and fine art paper (😅not ashamed to say it, I’m in college okay🫵🏽). I thank Justice Oshiyoye @pure.justice, founder of DUHTROIT for giving us the space to learn and make mistakes because that’s how we grow. Thank you for supporting us all the way!

A lot has happened with PROGRESSION.

Over the past several weeks, the project has moved through exhibitions, interviews, portfolio reviews, workshops, studio sessions, new work, conversations, documentation, and a lot of moments in between.

Now that we’ve had a chance to step back and catalogue everything, we’re excited to start sharing more of what PROGRESSION actually was — how it came together, the people who contributed to it, and the progression we witnessed along the way.

Consider this the beginning of the story.
