Reclaimed clay might not be every potter’s favourite clay body, but a little black stain can completely transform its character.

These came out of the kiln today. Love the colour variations from the interaction with the matte black glaze underneath. The lighter glaze was supposed to be Crystal Green, but it turned out much darker and more brownish than expected. Love how unpredictable the firing can be. by @duikan.objects

Tim’s object

The process of making this vessel and finding the right plant for it has been quite rewarding.

The Shino glaze turned out much creamier than I expected, with only the edges revealing that beautiful orange tone. The mossy green patches came from sprinkling wood ash onto the surface, something I was inspired to experiment with after seeing Michelle’s rock objects at SOCA last term.

I think the vessel complements the natural colours of the bottle tree really well. The warm brown orange of the trunk against the soft green of the leaves.

A little piece of clay, glaze, and nature, made especially for Tim.

Made this vessel with a special plant in my head, a Queensland bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris).

When Hayley, the new owner of this piece, told me she had been looking for a vessel for her new bottle tree, I immediately told myself, they found each other.

I also took the chance to show her some of the other bottle trees I’ve been styling with my own planters.

First sold objects

I priced a few of my pieces a little higher than the rest, secretly hoping they wouldn’t sell so I could keep them for myself. But at the same time, I wanted to test the market and see how people responded, so I made them available for purchase anyway.

Turns out, they were all the first pieces to sell.

I’m incredibly happy, but also a tiny bit sad to say goodbye to my very first sold pieces. There’s something special about knowing these little objects I made with my own hands are now going to become part of someone else’s home.

Ikebana Vessel

My original intention was to throw a bowl larger than anything I’d made before. It was going beautifully, until the wall collapsed when I placed it on the table a little too quickly. Gravity pulled the rim down, and the form started to collapse.

Instead of trying to fix it, I decided to work with what had happened. I inverted the rim and reshaped the form, turning an accident into something more intentional.

The result is this flowing ikebana vessel or perhaps a fruit bowl. A fellow potter said it looks like a bug
