This week was supposed to be my voyage to the majestic island of Cuba.My heart was already packed in linen and sunlight, ready to walk her streets and breathe in her historia.

PERO…

life, and the political climate unfortunately had other plans.

So instead of Havana’s malecón, I found myself here in Little Havana un pedacito de Cuba right in the middle of Miami ….and let me tell you something softly, from the center of my chest…

The spirit of Cuba is very much alive aquí!

In the domino tables where the abuelos laugh too loud.In the cafecito passed hand to hand con tanto cariño.In the music floating through the air like it refuses to ever be silenced.

Esta semana I was reminded that a homeland is not just geography. It is people. It is rhythm. It is memory living inside of skin.

My prayers remain with the souls that belong to Cuba…con todo mi corazón. I pray for peace to find you gently, for freedom to arrive fully, and for joy to return in ways that cannot be taken away.

Until the day my feet finally touch that sacred island…

Little Havana, gracias por holding me close. La cultura. La gente. La vibra.

Cuba lives wherever her people are.

Y eso… nobody can take away.

We Are Not All the Same …A Tribute to Being Afro-Latina 🌺✊🏾🇩🇴🇵🇷”

Being an Afro-Latina of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent is knowing that my roots stretch from the Caribbean to the deep soil of Africa and the soul of Black America. My mother’s blood carries the rhythm of gospel and the blues, and my father’s carries the drums of the island ,and together they beat inside me. I am a Black woman. I am a Caribbean woman. I am Latina.

Pero, let’s be clear…Latinx people do not all look the same. We are not all shaped by European features or fair skin. We are not all J-Lo, Marc Anthony, or Enrique Iglesias. Si, beautiful in their own right, but they do not represent all of us.

Some of us look like Gina Torres @iamginatorres , radiant with power; like Celia Cruz, @celiacruz who carried the entire diaspora in her voice; like Dascha Polanco, @sheisdash or Amara La Negra, @amaralanegraaln who remind the world that “muy negra, muy bonita” is not just possible mi amor it’s divine. Y claro, let’s not forget Laz Alonzo @lazofficial dios mío ! 😍 honestly, the list goes on !

Our history runs deeper than the surface. The Atlantic slave trade carved its legacy across every Caribbean shore. Enslaved Africans were brought to the islands long before many realize their blood, language, and resilience became the foundation of Latinx culture itself. To deny that is to deny truth. WE ARE OUR ANCESTORS ✊🏾

So let’s be more aware. Let’s read. Let’s teach. Let’s stop spreading ignorance about what it means to be Latina or Latinx. Because we are not a monolith. We are complex, powerful, and beautiful in every shade. From deep ebony to golden brown we are all la raza, la mezcla, la historia.

Prom circa 2007 😩 I can’t believe how long ago this was 🥴

Before prom was a second wedding😵‍💫 I wanted to wear a simple elegant black dress. Got in a limo with my date and friends… and after prom we got Waffle House and went home and talked in my backyard all night ….. good times!
