Ngugi wa Thiong'o, a legendary figure in my/our part of life, writes his last.

May he rest eternally, for the prodigious contributions he made to literature in Africa.

His Petals of Blood is one of four texts in my thesis, others being Achebe's Things Fall Apart, Bronte's Wuthering Heights and Conrad's Heart of Darkness, all of which share a range of psycho-existential themes.

Ngugi lived and desired, deservedly, to win the Nobel Prize, but sadly that coveted honour eluded him despite the prolific commitment he made to our literary universe...

You never knew a word in the books you urged me to read, but you could bet your life education is the greatest gift a man could give his child, without excuses!

When people quip, "you can't give what you don't have", I smile, because there was a great man who gave the formal education he never had. And you gave it with your heart, from your heart! Eternally grateful! 🥂🥂🥂

“Which Dr. Celeyyy?!”

Those were my first words!

In the hours and days that followed, Dr. Celey, I struggled to reconcile some conflicting instincts, for you lived life with infectious zest and passion, which kept at bay any form of ailments or infirmities; so, when I heard the very sad news of your death, it really hit like a contradiction in terms!

Working with you as my employer for over a decade, your typical timeline was often short because you believed in intensity; you believed that “the reason we all leave our homes is to work”, and you detested “going around in circles” when “there is much work to be done!”

In all that, we were good friends!

You made people around you to cultivate excellent work ethics, and inspired them to never accept the chance to crawl...but the opportunity to run!

Is that why, Dr. Celey, your race is run all too soon???

This is an immense blunder!

Even at 56, you yielded to the inevitabilities of death all too soon. This is another of death’s cruel and notorious failure to self-regulate; a bewildering thoughtlessness that hit much below the belt!

We’ll never forget: YOU WERE HERE, DR. CELEY!

You excelled the best way you could, setting scalable and timeless examples in a very short life, as you gave talents the opportunity to grow and become!

As you always said: “We don’t want super stars; we just want people with a sense of responsibility!”

By way of consolation, you’ve left in everyone you left behind, in everyone that crossed your path, a piece of your memories!
