Had such a good time and saw some amazing local art checking out the “local character” exhibit at Dutoit Gallery in Dayton! I highly recommend checking it out and supporting some local artists of various mediums !!

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month and it’s also the anniversary of my Autism evaluations and then the follow up appointment where I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD.

Getting diagnosed as a adult with Level 2 Autism and combined type ADHD gave me answers I longed for my whole life and wondering: Why am I different? Why did I struggle so much? Why was I so misunderstood?
I am Autistic and ADHD and that’s okay.

This has been a journey and everyday I am still on this journey of understanding and embracing and also accommodating, advocating, and creating accessibility for myself in regards to my Autism and my ADHD (among other disabilities)

This journey has been hard. I spent years on waitlists to get my evaluations and went through so much hardship in the process and one day I hope I can better tell my story. But I’m still healing from ableism and being mislabeled.

My Autism diagnosis validated and explained my struggles with disability and my everyday reality.

I celebrated my Autism diagnosis with the people closest to me <3 It was a lovely day that reminded me how loved I am and how embraced and accepted I am for being Autistic and ADHD by those closest to me <3

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. During April to spread awareness and acceptance of barefooting as a legitimate and legal accessibility and accommodation for individuals with Autism, Tyler @barefootautismchallenge hosts the #barefootautismchallenge !

I am Autistic and ADHD (AUDHD). I barefoot due to my sensory issues, and overstimulation and pain caused by shoes due to my Autism (and ADHD). Wearing shoes can lead to meltdowns and distress. Barefooting prevents that distress and meltdowns. Barefooting helps me focus, think more clearly, and process information and stimuli faster and clearer. Barefooting gives me grounding and mental clarity.

Advocating for barefooting and Autism to me is about autonomy, freedom, accessibility, accommodation and acceptance. It’s about managing my disabilities (others included not just Autism and ADHD). It’s also about pain management and grounding, being more connected to my environment and more present in my body.

A lot of people on Autism spectrum (and/or with ADHD) need to barefoot due to their sensory issues and overstimulation and pain caused by shoes. We need people to understand this is an accessibility and accommodation issue for people with Autism (and ADHD).

However, this is NOT a universal experience across the Autism Spectrum. Some people with Autism (and/or ADHD) need to wear shoes (and also often at times in situations others typically* wouldn’t wear shoes) due to sensory issues and stimulations issues and needs. And some people on the Autism Spectrum fall somewhere in the middle where sometimes they need to wear shoes and sometimes they need to barefoot based on their needs. Some people on the Autism Spectrum don’t have a preference or aversive experience with either barefooting or shoes.

Take part in the challenge to spread awareness for barefooting as an accommodation and accessibility issue for many Autistic individuals by posting pictures of you barefoot using the tag #barefootautismchallenge !!
