The Wall Street Journal called Dundee “Scotland’s coolest city” when the V&A opened. Locals were delighted and bemused. It’s easy. Dundee is cool.

SUMMER IN NASHVILLE MUSIC FESTIVAL: There were lots of “hee haas” and”ya’lls” as Texas took over Slessor Gardens in Dundee yesterday for the Summer In Nashville Music Festival. Country music is having a moment after the death of Dolly Parton as Dolly has three hits in the top ten. Number one is the song you can hear which is “Choosin Texas” by Ella Langley. CULTURE CABARET: I had the pleasure of doing a photoshoot with Maria Ansdell who plays Cabaret MC Razmatastique and many others in Closure Cabaret which is at Hoots @ Nicholson Square at 4.00pm until 31st August. I asked Razmatastique a few important questions and it seems that she listens to Serge Gainsbourg a lot, can name over 400 French cheeses, enjoys a fine red wine and loves croissants. She doesn’t like British food apart from M&S Marmalade. She loves romance. I give her show 🥐🥐🥐🥐🥐.

DOOF IN THE PARK Dundee July 2026. DJ, producer, and label head Hannah Laing (see final picture) brought the incredible DOOF IN THE PARK back to Dundee for another year, with hard house, techno and trance. Photographers report: I tried something different this year after taking some cool pictures of this event last year. I thought I would make every picture an upright picture to fit well into Instagram. It was much more difficult this time as you really need to be wide. The experience was very intense in my little part of the Doof. The music not surprisingly was VERY VERY LOUD!!!!!! Getting a decent picture was a matter of seeing something interesting, squeezing through the dancing throng then waiting for a moment, just a moment when you had an open view of what you wanted to photograph. Not easy. I found guys really difficult to photograph as soon as they saw me they would stop dancing and give me stupid grins and funny faces. The girls, as always in these situations, just kept dancing. Timing is crucial too. There gets a point where there are too many people dancing for you to get around. Hopefully there is another Doof next year as you learn so much each time. Pictures taken with a Fuji X100 V1 #doof_music #hannahlaingdj #doof #doofdoof #hannalaing by @dundeeiscool

ART FINDS YOU I was delighted to get an invite to the Preview Night of the hugely popular Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s Undergraduate Degree Show on Friday night. There was an exciting atmosphere as invited guests mixed with the young artists and talked to them about their work and future plans. I chatted to quite a few and found them delightful. I hope I captured some of the buzz of what was a very big night for the students. Best of luck to all the artists I photographed and all the best in the future. The exhibition is free and is open until Sunday May 31st Here’s a few details to go with the pictures.

COLIN MCKILLOP: ARCHIVE PICTURES 4. SOHO. LONDON. 1990’s. “As restaurants flowed out to pavements pleasure seekers adopted Continental habits and made Soho seem more like a Fellini film” Before I get back to my @dundeeiscool posts here is the final set of archive pictures that you might like. Soho in the nineties was an exotic mix of the glamorous, the colourful and the fascinating. Tourists had not quite discovered Soho and it was a joy sitting outside a cafe or wandering the streets unchanged in decades. Much of the old Soho has gone but you can still find it if you look for it!😎 Taken with a Nikon 35ml film camera with various lenses. by @dundeeiscool

COLIN MCKILLOP: ARCHIVE PICTURES 3. London Stock Exchange 1996. As I have a few weeks before my next post on @dundeeiscool I thought some of my followers might like to see some of my pictures when I was working in London years ago. This is a set of pictures that were taken in 1996 outside The Bank Of England in The City of London. You can see many clues as to how this time thirty years ago is very different from today. It is very 1990’s. Just about when The City was at it’s peak. Lots of workers commuting to work. Mostly men and few women. Smoking. Very sharp and expensive suits. Ties. Newspapers under arms. Expensive briefcases. Haircuts. Umbrellas! All different from today. Can you spot anything else that has changed? Look at how intense they all look at 8.30 in the morning. They all seem to be in a hurry, mostly alone and lost in their own thoughts apart from the couple happily chatting in the first picture. Are they thinking about work or are they thinking about what they are going to have for breakfast from the canteen? To take this group of pictures I stood in the same spot from 8.00am to 9.00am from Monday to Friday. I used a very wide angle lens which had its focus preset with my camera to my eye. Do they look content? Do they look stuck in a rut? What do you think? Let me know.😎 Pictures taken with Nikon FM2 35 ml film camera and a 24ml lens by @dundeeiscool

COLIN MCKILLOP ARCHIVE PICTURES 2: 1990’s. As I have a couple of weeks until my next post I thought some of my followers might like to see a few pictures I took years ago in London. I know that there is a bit of nostalgia for the Nineties. It was so different from now in so many ways and I do have feelings of nostalgia for that time. Any nineties fans out there? What do you remember. What do you miss?

COLIN MCKILLOP: ARCHIVE PICTURES 1. After a bruising encounter with an Instagram bot trying to open up another account for my archive pictures I gave up and thought some followers here would perhaps enjoy seeing a selection of them. (Is this what is called a “photo dump”? I am a few weeks away from my next @dundeeiscool post so why not? None of these pictures were shot in Dundee with all photographs, apart from two, in and around London. They were all shot in the nineties which I hear is all the rage. I can’t give you exact years as”if you can remember the nineties you weren’t there!” Have they started saying that yet? I know that Gen Z love everything about the nineties. CAN YOU SPOT ANYTHING NINETIESISH? Here we go with some captions of each picture.

CATWALK:THE ART OF FASHION It was a great night at the opening party at V&A Dundee last night. I don’t think I have seen V&A Dundee looking so cool as Dundee’s finest dressers came along for the private view. I really enjoyed myself. I even had a chat with the lovely Clare Grogan who was looking fabulous! The exhibition is a real blockbuster and has to be the best exhibition at V&A Dundee for years. There is a lot to see so I think I shall go a few more times to get the feel of it. CATWALK: THE ART OF FASHION exhibition charts the dramatic evolution of the catwalk from the salons of the late 19th Century to today. Through a mix of film, photography and original garments the exhibition marks moments from iconic runway presentations and explores their cultural impact. April 2026. ARCHIVE PICTURE: LONDON 1995 As a celebration of the upcoming V&A Dundee exhibition “CATWALK: THE ART OF THE FASHION SHOW” I have dug out two fashion images that you might like to see. The first was taken at the “Alternative Fashion Show” in Spittalfields Market in London. I did not use long lenses so I just concentrated on the legs! The second picture was taken outside the V&A in London. It was a photo call for a show by Pierre Cardin, a French fashion designer who was known for his avant-garde style and Space Age designs!Catwalk: The Art of Fashion exhibition charts the dramatic evolution of the catwalk from the salons of the late 19th century to today. Through a mix of film, photography, original garments, the exhibition marks moments from iconic runway presentations and explores their cultural impact. This extremely cool exhibition is at V&A Dundee from 3rd April. Pictures taken with a Nikon FM2 35 Ml film camera. www.vadundee.com @vadundee #vadundee by @dundeeiscool

Archive pictures: Behind the scenes at Dundee Rep’s production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street” In early 2010 I was given access to behind the scenes at Dundee Rep. Most of my pictures were taken in the rehearsal space with some in “wardrobe”, in the dressing rooms and some at a technical rehearsal on stage. I found the experience fascinating. It was a very big production and the director and his assistant did a wonderful job in pulling it all together. Whether talking to them in a large group, small groups or one to ones he seemed to know exactly what he wanted and how his interpretation was going to be. Sometimes it was intense and sometimes there was a bit of hanging around but you could tell the cast loved every minute. They were all extremely chatty and friendly and were always talking to me. I became part of the space. It was fun. As with life in the theatre the cast came together for a moment in time and departed when the run was over. Sweeney Todd would be a memory and perhaps a framed poster on the wall. Only Emily Winter and Ann Louise Ross are still with Dundee Rep’s ensemble cast and have had many fine productions behind them. What a privilege it was for me. Taken with a Nikon FM2 35 ml film camera. #dundeereptheatre #dundeerep *Has anyone recognised the music? It is from a very famous French New Wave film😎 by @dundeeiscool
