On 22 July 2028, Dunedin’s time to shine will come - ironically, just as the sun disappears behind the moon during a rare total solar eclipse.

Turns out Dunedin nailed the audition.

‘Dunedin: Auditioning Now’ has picked up ⭐️GOLD⭐️ at the @cannescorporate Media & TV Awards, taking out the ‘Destinations - City’ category.

It’s the second Gold for the showreel this year, after also winning Best City Promotion at the US International Awards, with a couple more award selections still to come.

And while a trophy on the mantel is always nice, the real win is getting more eyes on Dunedin as a filming destination. Film studios are taking notice, with some big-budget productions in the city this week.

Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’, starring @florencepugh, arrives 1 October, with a little bit of Ōtepoti playing its part in the epic new adaptation.

It’s far from Dunedin’s first starring role. Over the years, our streets, beaches, grand old buildings and landscapes have quietly appeared in productions big and small.

We’ve never been much for blowing our own trumpet. Luckily, @lonelyplanet brought theirs.

Dunedin has been named in Lonely Planet’s annual bestseller, ‘Best in Travel’, as one of 25 must-visit destinations in the world for 2027.

Travel experts threw around words like “quirky”, “cool” and “full of characters” while singling out two uniquely Dunedin attractions - Tales from Darkest Dunedin and the Dunedin Museum of Natural Mystery for their wonderfully weird take on our history and natural world.

Plenty of love also went to Larnach Castle, Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Dunedin Craft Distillers, The Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance (The OPERA), The Royal Albatross Centre and the Dunedin Railway Station. We’re pretty stoked, to say the least.

The official New Zealand Quality of Life Survey results are in, and Dunedin came out on top in quite a few areas – including retaining the highest quality of life in NZ from the last time the survey was done in 2024.

We’ve always known life is pretty good down here. Now we’ve got the data to back it up. The research methods are rigorous. Our interpretation, somewhat less so…
