Was a dream to put all these voices I admire into the same space from @jawaraalleyne to @diotima.world @rachelleighscott , @alvarobarrington, @chiefrichardcurrie and so many more.

The hand-illustrations and portraits that fill the pages were inspired by West-African Calabash/nzu etchings, where etchings are used as an offering to deities and a medium to channel, communicate and connect with both the past, and ancestors. Equally inspired by the archives of newspapers and journals such as Savacou, Hot Spice and the West Indian Gazette, Duppy functions to create a tangible contemporary record of the intersection between art and politics, and practices that harken back to the past in a Jamaican context.

@duppyprojects is a newspaper in negative: pages saturated in black ink, with text printed in white.

This limited-edition publication from @josephdouglaselmhirst takes its title from the Jamaican Patois term for a ghost and explores – through photography and conversations with @alvarobarrington, @eastwindscove.jamaica, @devonncharlesfrancis and others – how Jamaica’s past has shaped artistic practices across the Black diaspora.

“In a country that has such a complex history as Jamaica, but so little of it recorded, it feels really important to create something tangible,” says Joseph, who was inspired by the archives of newspapers and journals such as Savacou, Hot Spice and the West Indian Gazette. “I wanted the fragility of the newsprint to reflect the fragility of preservation in that region.”

He worked with graphic designer @bryce.carrington to bring a “gothic sensibility” to the newspaper and wax-pencil illustrations by Violet Hoppe (@hoppppppeeeee) materialise like apparitions across the pages.

Here is a look at #DUPPY, out now via @duppyprojects & printed by @newspaperclub.

“In a country that has such a complex history as Jamaica, but so little recorded history, it feels important to create something tangible. Working with @newspaperclub to bring DUPPY to life made that possible.” said DUPPY Director and Co-Editor @josephdouglaselmhirst. Bringing together original contributions from a dynamic community of artists, writers, and cultural thinkers like @alvarobarrington @jawaraalleyne, @isatbuchanan, @chiefrichardcurrie, @rachelleighscott of @diotima.world, @rubyelmhirst, @devonncharlesfrancis, @lucakhouri, #JovanScottLewis, @daniellehmyers, @thekadsmeow, and @eastwindscove.jamaica, DUPPY reflects the ghosts of the past by connecting those whose practices intersect with it, while simultaneously informing a liberated vision of the future. “I wanted the design of the book to mirror its gothic sensibility. It’s a collection of ghost stories. Newspaper Club’s Midi format enabled full-bleed printing to bring this concept to life, allowing each story to flow seamlessly from page to page” shared Joseph.

“The design of Duppy is informed by the stories it holds. By reclaiming and queering established design principles, the publication reimagines familiar visual languages as something distinctly our own. This approach echoes the history of the Black diaspora, where inherited cultures, traditions, and systems have long been adapted, transformed, and redefined beyond the confines of whiteness” shared @bryce.carrington, DUPPY’s graphic and layout designer.

Inspired by chalk illustrations, Duppy was hand illustrated. “The illustrations tie together the stories, while emphasizing the harmonious quality of each contributor” says @josephdouglaselmhirst. “To create these portraits and illustrations I used a white wax pencil, charcoal, and black paper as the background for the drawings. Instead of sketching the outline, and shading in the darker points, I tried to pull the images from the shadows. Drawing only the light and working with the values. Celebrating the launch of his beautiful book DUPPY (his first book and the debut release from @duppyprojects), these 8 tracks act as a musical companion to the book, each highlighting the enduring impact of Jamaican culture. We chatted about why Joseph shoots Jamaica in black and white, shazamming flashes of music out of his window, how he feels and hears a film before he writes it, Nicki Minaj’s pronunciation of “cigarette” on “Hold Yuh,” and much, much more. - @frinkles

DUPPY (2026) explores memory, ancestry, and resistance, weaving the past into the present and future through a distinctly Jamaican lens. Speaking about the original contributions from the likes of @chiefrichardcurrie, @alvarobarrington, @jawaraalleyne, @rachelleighscott of @diotima.world, @devonncharlesfrancis, and @eastwindscove.jamaica, Joseph explained: “If I can’t put all these people in a physical room, I wanted to put them in a book and have them be able to coexist.”
