After a trip to London when I was 19, I told my dad I was thinking about moving there. The visa reqs were pretty achievable and I wasn’t anchored by a uni degree, so I felt pretty free to make the move.

At the end of the conversation he said, “Let’s catch up at Circular Quay this weekend.”

We sat at an overpriced cafe along the water, close to the Opera House steps, and shared stories. I told my dad about how incredible it was seeing Frank Ocean, and he spoke about his time living in London as a teacher.

He went on to talk about returning home after living overseas and intentionally treating Sydney as if he were from somewhere else in the world. He would take himself to places like Circular Quay and allow himself to see the harbour as more than just his backyard.

He encouraged me to do the same. And I’ve never really stopped.

A lot of people talk about Sydney being “dead” or “boring”, but hardly leave their local areas. Discovery is something that gives me so much life, and I make an effort to find it in different ways. Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing a different beach to swim at or eating in an area I’m unfamiliar with and stopping into independent stores nearby.

2 Birds, 1 Stone.

I’ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone a bit and lean into my creativity.

One way I’ve been doing that is to pocket my Camera when I’m out, which honestly makes me more aware of what’s going on around me.

Another way is to write my thoughts in my captions.
