Jeff Brushie joining Ride Snowboards in 1997 remains one of the most historic milestones in snowboarding history, marking the sport's first three-year, million-dollar contract. Prior to the shocking switch, Brushie was an iconic freestyle pioneer and superstar for Burton Snowboards, famous for his signature dreadlocks, skateboard-inspired style, and legendary pro models like the 1993 "Trout" board. When Ride Snowboards extended an unprecedented six-figure annual offer, Burton declined to match it, cementing Brushie's legacy as the first true "rock star" rider to leverage his massive influence into a milestone payout. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #jeffbrushie #ridesnowboards #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
2000/2001 Burton Jim Rippey Pro Model. 🏂 Background & Significance The Rider: Jim Rippey was one of the absolute pioneers of freestyle and backcountry snowboarding in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was famous for stomping massive cliffs and making history by landing the first-ever backflip on a snowmobile. The Graphic: This specific edition features the highly recognizable "City Skyline" graphic, which depicts a futuristic, stylized urban cityscape at sunset, bordered by a vibrant red base and top-sheet wrap. Some enthusiasts call the board "Fall guy" because of the falling person on the back and basejumper on the topsheet. Collector Status: Because this model comes from the golden era of pro-model snowboards, it has transitioned from a piece of active mountain gear into a highly sought-after collector's item. Pristine or well-preserved versions of this board are frequently bought and sold by vintage snowboard enthusiasts to be displayed as wall art. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #burtonsnowboards #jimrippey #cityskyline #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
The Checker Pig "Spirit 160" from the 1992/1993 winter season is a prime example of the wild, experimental phase of early European snowboard manufacturing. It perfectly blends German engineering with the loud, counter-culture graphic art of the 1990s. Brand Background: The Rise of Checker Pig Origins: Checker Pig was originally founded in Berlin, Germany by Udo Gurgel, a former motocross rider. The brand initially made a massive name for itself in the late 1980s by producing cutting-edge, high-end chromoly mountain bikes and BMX bikes. The Snowboard Boom: As snowboarding exploded in popularity across Europe in the late '80s and early '90s, Checker Pig shifted resources to snowboarding to compete with early pioneers like Burton, Sims, Kemper, and Hooger Booger. Legacy of Innovation: Checker Pig was known for highly advanced designs, experimenting heavily with lightweight foam cores and extreme sidecuts. They were also trailblazers for inclusivity in the sport, developing the first-ever female-specific freestyle pro model with team rider Lisa Vinciguerra in the early '90s. By the late 1990s, intense competition forced the company to discontinue its snowboard line and return entirely to bicycle production. Technical Information & Design Profile Model & Sizing: The Spirit 160 boasts a length of 160 cm. In the early '90s, a 160cm board was a highly versatile size—built to handle all-mountain freeriding, stability at high speeds, and deep powder tracking. Shape & Performance: Unlike the completely squared-off race boards of the era, the Spirit series favored a directional freeride shape with a highly pronounced, rounded, and tapered nose. This allowed the nose to stay afloat easily in powder while keeping a solid effective edge hold on icy slopes. The Graphic Aesthetic: The graphic on the top sheet is highly representative of the brand's iconic identity. It features the famous neon pink punk-rock pig mascot wearing shades at the nose, transitioning into vibrant, abstract pop-art camo patterns down the body. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #checkerpig #spirit #neonera #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
The Heavy Tools SF 160 (often referred to as the FS 160) is an iconic, vintage alpine race snowboard from the 1992/1993 season. Heavy Tools was a highly respected Austrian snowboard and mountain bike brand that was very popular and trendsetting in Central Europe during the early 1990s. Specifications & Features Design & Type: This board was specifically built for carving and racing at high speeds. It features an asymmetric shape designed exclusively for hardboots. Stance Options: Because of its asymmetric design, Heavy Tools released it in two distinct versions: the SF 160 reg (for regular riders) and the SF 160 goofy (for goofy riders). Dimensions & Weight: The board has a length of 160 cm and a weight of approximately 3.44 kg, maybe that's why they named their brand Heavy Tools 😁🏂 Art Design by Gudrun Geiblinger". Gudrun Geiblinger is a well-known Austrian artist and product designer who created iconic snowboard and windsurf graphics for major brands like Heavy Tools and F2 during the 1990s. Since Heavy Tools stopped producing snowboards in the mid-1990s, this model is highly sought after today as a collector's item for vintage snowboard enthusiasts. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #heavytools #gudrungeiblinger #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
This Barfoot Freeride Men's Snowboard (169cm) was released in 1996. Board Background & History The Pioneer Behind It: The board was manufactured by Barfoot Snoboards, a company founded in 1981 by Chuck Barfoot. Chuck Barfoot is widely celebrated as one of the ultimate founding fathers of snowboarding. Before launching his own brand, he worked alongside fellow pioneer Tom Sims in the late 1970s, crafting some of the earliest snowboards in world history. The "Bear Paw" Graphic: The distinctive bear paw print on the white nose oval is an iconic, highly recognizable signature graphic for the Barfoot brand from this golden era of snowboarding. The Technical Build: Barfoot was a surfer at heart, which heavily influenced his board designs. This particular model is an early directional freeride board. It featured a stouter, medium-to-stiff flex (rated around a 7 out of 10) and a wider waist profile. This construction gave advanced riders maximum stability, a surf-like carve, and incredible floatation when blasting through deep backcountry powder. Historical Significance: While Chuck Barfoot famously revolutionized the entire winter sports world by developing the industry's very first conventional twin-tip freestyle board in the mid-1980s, models like this 1991 Freeride stayed true to his original surf-on-snow roots. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #barefoot #chuckbarefoot #claw #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
The 2006 Burton Fish, one of the most legendary and influential powder-specific boards in snowboarding history. The Background of the Burton Fish Introduced in the early 2000s, the Burton Fish revolutionized how snowboarders approached deep powder. Before its creation, riders who wanted to stay afloat in deep snow had to ride massive, stiff, oversized boards. The Design Revolution: The Fish was co-designed by snowboard icon Terje Håkonsen and veteran Burton board shaper JG (John Gerndt). Their goal was to bring a surf-like feel to the snow. They realized that by tapering the board (making the nose much wider than the tail) and shortening the overall length, they could create a nimble board that effortlessly floated without fatiguing the rider's back leg. The 2006 Edition: The 2006 model features a highly recognizable, classic "woody topsheet" aesthetic. It mimics the look of a polished surfboard stringer and wood grain veneer, blending a vintage surf vibe with snow technology. The Swallow/Pins Tail: It features an exaggerated swallow-like shape or pin-tail that allows the back of the board to naturally sink into the snow, automatically lifting the wide, rockered nose out of the powder. 3D Mounting System: This specific year utilizes Burton’s legacy 3D mounting pattern (the three-hole triangle insert configuration), which was the standard before Burton transitioned to "The Channel" system. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #burtonsnowboards #burtonfish #powderboard #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
The Burton Jim Rippey "Knight" (often referred to by collectors as the Rippey Warrior) is one of the most iconic vintage collector pieces in snowboarding history. Released for the 2000/2001 winter season, this legendary board was custom-designed for big-mountain and freestyle pioneer Jim Rippey. Here is a breakdown of what makes this specific board so special: 1. The Design: Dark Fantasy Artwork The board is instantly recognizable by its dark pulp-fantasy and heavy metal album aesthetics: The Topsheet: The graphic features a metallic-grey finish with a highly detailed illustration of a medieval knight charging on horseback under a crescent moon. The style heavily mirrors the famous fantasy art of Frank Frazetta. The Base: The bottom provides a stark, gritty contrast, showcasing a swamp monster attacking a woman. These edgy, raw graphics perfectly captured the late-90s and early-2000s snowboard counter-culture. 2. Ride Characteristics & Specs The Rippey Knight was built to survive massive backcountry drops and high-speed lines: Wide-Body Profile: The 157 cm version was engineered as a wider freestyle board. This added stability when landing in deep powder and completely eliminated toe-drag for riders with larger boot sizes. Super Fly Core & Camber: It featured Burton's premium lightweight wood core wrapped in a stiff flex pattern. Combined with a traditional camber profile, it delivered massive pop and stability. 3D Mounting System: Like all Burton boards of this era, it utilizes the classic 3D triangular insert pattern rather than the modern Channel system. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #burtonsnowboards #jimrippey #knight #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
Burton Air (1991/1992 model). The type designation 6.1 represents the length of the board: 161 centimeters. The Air production line from this exact era marks a crucial tipping point in the history of modern snowboarding. Historical Background The Freestyle Revolution: In the early '90s, snowboarding rapidly transformed from a niche backyard hobby into a mainstream, respected mountain sport. The Burton Air series played a starring role because it was one of the first boards specifically engineered for technical freestyle maneuvers and aerials, during an era when halfpipes were still dug out entirely by hand. The Legacy Link: The evolution of the Air line is inextricably linked to the sport's greatest pioneers. Legend Craig Kelly helped develop these early Air shapes. Simultaneously, style icon Jeff Brushie won the iconic 1991 Men's Halfpipe Championship riding a variant of this Air series, instantly cementing its cult status among riders. Foundation for the "Custom": The Air line was so successful that Burton used its exact blueprint and rider feedback to build a new prototype. This directly led to the 1995/1996 launch of the Burton Custom—which went on to become the best-selling and most iconic snowboard model of all time. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #burtonsnowboards #burtonair #craigkelly #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
The 2000/2001 Burton Jim Rippey "Knight" (often referred to by collectors as the Rippey Warrior) is an iconic piece of 1990s/2000 snowboarding history. It is the longest, wide-body variant from Burton's premier signature line dedicated to big-mountain freestyle legend Jim Rippey. The complete background behind the development, technology, and legacy of this specific board involves a few key details: 1. The Debut of Jim Rippey's Signature Line Released for the 2000/2001 winter season, the "Knight" belongs to the very first signature pro-model line Burton ever built for Jim Rippey. Rippey was a massive star in early 90s snowboard cinema (such as the Standard Films TB series), known for stepping up the game of freestyle tricks by taking them into raw backcountry terrain. This launch began a legendary run where Rippey would have seven consecutive pro models with Burton, heavily shaping the brand's freestyle image. 2. Design Identity: The Frazetta Connection The visual design on this model captures the counter-culture aesthetic of 90s/2000 snowboarding, drawing heavily from pulp fantasy and heavy metal album art styles: The Inspiration: The illustration of the medieval warrior charging forward on a dark warhorse beneath a crescent moon heavily mimics the signature styles of fantasy oil painters like Frank Frazetta #dutchsnowboardmuseum #burtonsnowboards #jimrippey #knight #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
Here is the complete history behind the 1996 Lib Tech Emmagator "Red Tetons" board. The Artistic Masterpiece by Mike Parillo The defining feature of this board is its striking topsheet graphic, painted by legendary artist Mike Parillo. The Debut Painting: The "Red Tetons" graphic was actually Parillo's very first oil painting (oil on linen, originally 60" x 72"). Hard Winter Lane: Parillo painted the piece in 1996 while living in a studio on Hard Winter Lane in Jackson, Wyoming. Surrounded by a harsh, heavy winter, he created a raw, primitive, and apocalyptic interpretation of the Grand Teton mountain range using fiery red and orange hues. The Counter-Culture Aesthetic: At the time, Lib Tech's primary artist, Jamie Lynn, was famous for his flowing, dreamy, blue-toned graphics. Parillo’s "Red Tetons" brought a heavier, more aggressive, and abstract energy that perfectly matched the raw punk and grunge culture of the Pacific Northwest snowboard scene. The Technical Platform: The Emmagator 165 Built by Mervin Manufacturing in Washington State, the board itself was an aggressive freestyle-freeride machine built for serious backcountry riders. Traditional Camber: Decades before Lib Tech invented Magne-Traction or Banana Rocker, the Emmagator relied on a powerful traditional camber profile and deep radial sidecut for maximum pop and stability at high speeds. Blunted Shape: The Emmagator series featured early iterations of "blunted" (squared-off) noses and tails. This reduced the swing weight of the board without sacrificing the effective edge length, making it highly maneuverable in deep powder and tight spins. Cultural Legacy & Collectibility The board holds a mythical status because it was born in Mervin's ExperiMENTAL Division, where boards were treated as artistic canvases rather than mass-market sports gear. Mike Parillo later noted that the exact board he rode in Jackson Hole during the late 90s felt like "pure magic." This era laid the groundwork for Parillo's lifelong creative collaborations with Lib Tech icons and a young Travis Rice. #dutchsnowboardmuseum #libtechnologies #mikeparillo #emmagator #vintagesnowboards by @dutchsnowboardmuseum
