The Thirteenth and Fourteenth Doctors Sonic Screwdrivers

We all know this is the Thirteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, but it was also used by the Fourteenth Doctor in the comic Liberation of the Daleks, which takes place immediately after Thirteen regenerates into Fourteen.

During the comic, the sonic briefly appears to emit a blue light instead of the expected orange. This only lasts for a few panels before returning to orange for the remainder of the comic.

Whether this was intentional or simply an artistic error, I guess we’ll never know.

The three sonic variants used by the Ninth Doctor:

The Cream Aztec, Wide Slider Aztec, and Grey Aztec.

The Cream Aztec was the original version. After appearing in only three episodes, it underwent multiple modifications, including having a channel cut into the body to allow for a sliding mechanism, creating the Wide Slider Aztec. So, those two are actually the same physical prop.

The Grey Aztec is a separate prop, distinguished by its greyish finish.

The Wide Slider and Grey Aztec continued into the Tenth Doctor’s era, where they would undergo numerous further modifications and repairs.

The 9th Doctor’s Cream Aztec

The Cream Aztec was the first of all the New Who sonics. It was used exclusively by the Ninth Doctor and appeared in only three episodes: Rose, Aliens of London, and World War Three.

Following its use in these episodes, the prop was subsequently modified into the Wide Slider Aztec.

Here’s a video of me demonstrating, both the standard and secret sound effects on this unreleased prototype.

As far as I’m aware, Character Options had planned to produce this colour variant, but before a full production run could be made and released, the project was ultimately cancelled.

A small number of fully functional prototypes did, however, make their way out into the wild.

The prototype is largely similar to the original Deluxe Edition, but with a few differences (apart from the colour).

Instead of the secret SFX from the Master’s Laser Screwdriver, this version features sound effects from the Twelfth Doctor’s second sonic screwdriver, along with a new selection of light colours. by @dw_proplicas

The beautiful “Champagne” variant of the Fifteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, a version that was only seen briefly in one or two episodes.

As far as I’m aware, Character Options had planned to produce this colour variant, but before a full production run could be made and released, the project was ultimately cancelled. A small number of fully functional prototypes did, however, make their way out into the wild.

This is one of those prototypes.

This Champagne variant is by far my favourite of all of Ncuti’s sonics. It’s such a shame we only got to see it in a few blink and you’ll miss it moments.

A couple of custom sonic screwdrivers I’ve had since… maybe 2018?

I especially love the first one, with its crystal emitter and colour changing sections.

Can’t decide on an emitter colour? Why not all of them! 😂

The Fugitive Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver

As soon as this sonic was revealed as part of the Circuit Breaker event, I knew I had to add it to my collection. Huge thanks to @crackers_props for this brilliant 3D-printed replica!

As far as I’m aware, UNIT members Osgood and Andrew discover that the Fugitive Doctor is the earliest known incarnation they’ve encountered, explaining why she doesn’t yet carry a sonic screwdriver. Using UNIT’s records of the Doctors future sonics they build one for her, which is why its design subtly resembles sonic screwdrivers carried by her future incarnations. by @dw_proplicas

The Master’s Laser Screwdrivers by @nawya_replica

Here we have the original version (left) alongside the re(Master)ed edition (right).

The proportions have been adjusted to more accurate measurements. The emitter has also been reworked, with improvements to both its size and shape.

My personal favourite upgrade is the dial. Instead of the previous plastic piece with a crackle effect moulded into it, the remaster features genuine crackle paint! by @dw_proplicas

And I suppose… if it’s my last chance to say it… Rose Tyler…

On the 8th July 2006 at 7pm, I sat down to watch the series 2 finale.

I loved this story as a kid, and this two-parter was the first time I’d ever seen a Dalek. After the previous weeks episode, Army of Ghosts finished, I ran to my dad and excitedly told him that these things had come out of the sphere shouting,
“EXTERMINATE!” He just smiled and said, “They’re the Daleks.”

I spent all week impatiently waiting for part 2.

I loved the story so much that I went to a friends house to use her printer to print out promotional photos from this episode, specifically the one of the Cybermen and Daleks battling outside of Canary Wharf, and put them up as posters in my bedroom.

It’s hard to believe those memories are from 20 years ago! taken in Canary Wharf by @dw_proplicas
