Introducing Hwyl Studio - bringing performer training, creative retreats, original plays and musicals, adaptations and bespoke commissions together within Dog With A Bone. Following our recent overview, we’re taking a closer look at Hwyl Studio - and the thinking behind its name.

For us, Hwyl captures the spirit that makes creative work rewarding: the energy of a rehearsal room, the satisfaction of developing your craft and the excitement of discovering something through collaboration.

We want that spirit to run through the whole Studio, whether someone is continuing their training, developing a script, rehearsing a new musical or working with us on a commission.
The shared purpose is to nurture creative practice and bring people together to make work for audiences.

Rooted in Wales, Hwyl Studio brings together five strands:

Hwyl Development | January 2027
Our performer development programme for graduates across Wales. Regular training in Cardiff and Swansea will offer opportunities to maintain performance skills, explore different approaches and remain part of a creative community beyond full-time education.

Hwyl Retreats | Early 2027
Acting, directing, scriptwriting and musical theatre writing retreats, in partnership with @thegeorgianswansea at @morganshotelswansea.

Hwyl Originals | Spring 2027
Original plays, musicals and other performance work, developed with writers, composers and creative collaborators. Beginning with a new musical collaboration with @stuartbrayson.

Hwyl Adaptations | May 2027
Existing writing and stories reimagined as plays, musicals and other performance work. Beginning with a collaboration with the Dylan Thomas Centre.

Hwyl Commissions | 2027
Bespoke work for venues, organisations and creative partners, shaped around your brief, story and audience. Opening for commissions in 2027.

Proudly developing work in Wales, building lasting creative relationships and reaching audiences here and further afield.

IT’S OFFICIAL… JACK & THE BEANSTALK IS COMING TO THE YMA THEATRE! 🌱✨

It’s not every day you’d find Dame Dolly and Bramble the Dinosaur trotting down Taff street… but today was that day! The Dame and the Dino loved meeting the town of Pontypridd ahead of our upcoming production of Jack and the Beanstalk 🎀

For the first time in many years, pantomime returns to Pontypridd, and we’re making sure it comes back in spectacular style. This Christmas, prepare for a giant adventure packed with laughter, dazzling production, larger-than-life characters… and yes, dinosaurs 🦖

We’re thrilled to announce that Jack and the Beanstalk will be produced by Dog With A Bone Creative Studio and Roly Poly Events, bringing together two leading creative teams to mark the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for pantomime in Wales. Watch this space! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Summer began with a scream at Norton House… 🎬🔪

Dead On Cue - The Interactive Murder Mystery made its @nortonhousemumbles debut with The Final Cut. The first chapter in what promises to be many unforgettable nights of mystery, murder and mayhem!

Champagne was chilled, secrets unravelled, and the killer cut closer than anyone expected.

A beautiful seafront setting. Brilliant guests. A delicious amount of scandal. And the feedback? “The best one murder mystery we’ve ever been to.” 👀

The cameras may have stopped rolling on The Final Cut, but this is only the beginning... The next mystery unfolds this Halloween 👻

A new chapter for Dylan Thomas in Swansea.

On International Dylan Thomas Day, Dog With A Bone Creative Studio is proud to announce that we are forming a partnership with the Dylan Thomas Centre (@swansea_council) to help produce a new era of Dylan Thomas-focused work in the city he called home.

Dylan Thomas belongs to the world, but he also belongs here. To our streets, our coastline, our language, our humour, our contradictions, our communities. His work is something to reimagine, reawaken and place back into the hands of audiences, artists, young people and the city itself.

We are incredibly passionate about celebrating Dylan’s legacy in ways that feel alive, accessible and ambitious, through theatre, performance, education, events and creative experiences that honour the past while speaking boldly to the present.

This partnership marks the beginning of something very special. We cannot wait to share what comes next. A new era of Dylan Thomas work, made in Swansea.

Shakespeare’s greatest love story is reborn in the heart of 1926 South Wales in this thrilling new production blending passion, rebellion and the electric spirit of the roaring twenties.

As the country stands on the edge of collapse during the General Strike, two young people from rival worlds fall desperately and dangerously in love. Beneath the glow of jazz halls and dance floors, tensions rise through mining communities fighting for survival, while a new generation begins to challenge the rules of the old world.

Featuring live music, striking visuals, immersive atmosphere and a bold cinematic edge, ROMEO+JULIET transforms Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy into a visceral story of youth, conflict and hope. Flapper glamour collides with coal dust. Poetry collides with protest. And love burns brightly against a divided Wales.
