It’s hard to tell how tall / deep this rock wall is that’s supporting the parking lot and cafe, but I’d guess it’s at least 10 to 12 feet.

Normally it’s buried under sand that sits flush with the parking lot, and depending on the time of the year, can be close to 50 yards wide at the south end. Assuming there’s a stretch of beach that’s 150 yards long, we’re talking about at 90 MILLION lbs of sand that’s moved. That would be 2,000 to 2,400 dump truck deliveries of sand using 20 ton trucks. At 100 deliveries a day, that’s the better part of a month of nonstop sand delivery to fill it back in.

Please resist the urge to argue with me about beach dimensions, volume and the differences in weight between wet and dry sand. You know who you are. 🤣 My point is, the amount of sand that has moved is INSANE!

Hard to comprehend how destroyed Aliso is at this point. The lifeguard tower is in the parking lot now. The sidewalk and beach where it used to sit is gone, all that’s left is a gaping hole. The south end of the parking lot next to Lost Pier looks like a bomb went off, with large chunks of asphalt, concrete, sand and rock blasted all the way back to the hill.

Tropical Storm Rachel updates. The next 24 hours are going to be spicy. Looks like landfall south of the border, but maintaining TS force winds as it makes its way inland to the Southern California mountains and deserts east of San Diego. Expect more beach erosion and flooding. 6 foot morning high tide is going to run more like a 7.5 foot tide with the kelvin wave, Throw in 6-7 foot south east swell from Rachel spiking right around peak high tide. Not going to be good in many places that have already been hammered.
