SHE PERSISTED, THE MUSICAL has had quite a journey — from its world premiere at Bay Area Children’s Theater in 2019 to productions in New York, Washington DC, MTI’s Junior Theater Festival, and now performances by schools and theaters everywhere.

What has meant the most to us are the reactions from audiences, critics, performers and educators: kids seeing themselves onstage, parents leaving in tears, and young performers getting to tell the stories of women who refused to give up.

Here are just a few moments and responses from that journey. ❤️

Per my quick analysis Debbie may account for nearly 1/2 of @mtishows' upcoming productions of musicals from its TYA catalogue.

My methodology - using MTI's public upcoming production maps -
1) I counted all musicals Debbie helped create, including those she helped create as the music director or arranger of the show's world premiere. (Willy Wonka TYA, the world premiere she music directed at the Kennedy Center, gives her a big boost here.)
2) I counted other versions (e.g., Broadway Jr.) only if they were adapted from a show that was originally written as a TYA musical (Willy Wonka Jr. counts because Willy Wonka premiered as a TYA musical. Matilda Jr. does not because the junior version was adapted from the full-length Broadway show).
3) I counted TYA-specific adaptations of full-length Broadway shows (e.g., The Adventures of Tom Sawyer TYA).
4) I counted productions of the Broadway Junior Pure Imagination revue for all composers who had songs from their TYA musicals included (but not those from non-TYA musicals like Annie).

The result? TYA musicals Debbie helped create accounted for 46% of MTI's 665 currently-announced TYA productions (by my count). There are still a lot of theaters yet to announce their 2026-27 seasons, so these numbers could fluctuate quite a bit.
