🎉 Congratulations to @manjeet_k_mann on winning the 2021 Costa Children's Book Award for her brilliant verse novel, The Crossing.🏆

Inspired by events of the refugee crisis, The Crossing is the story of two teenagers, a British girl seeking refuge in swimming and an Eritrean boy who hopes to escape persecution by reaching the UK across the English Channel. Through their lives, we see both the harrowing ordeals faced by forced migrants and the struggle of humanity against xenophobia and hatred. The Crossing provides a much needed perspective of empathy for issues that affect us all. by @dwlpapercuts

The Gathering by @perrero.rocher is set in Sri Lanka. Seventeen-year-old Heshani, who grew up in the UK, accompanies her parents back to their homeland for a wedding. In Colombo, she reflects on the balancing act of her identity. A hundred miles away, an elephant and her herd begin their annual migration that will lead them to the Kaudulla National Park. As Heshani's path crosses with the elephant, the act of choosing to be who we want is juxtaposed with the violence of crossing human borders. Read the story in Papercuts Vol. 20: Nomad.
