Wahluu Gudyiwagagirri: Dhuluny Corroboree August 14, 2024

This image is so powerful to me.
This image is Culturally significant.
This image is 200 years in the making.

Context.
This is an overhead of the first corroboree to occur in Bathurst since martial law was declared on Wiradjuri Country, west of the Blue Mountains by Governor Thomas Brisbane on August 14, 1824.

This declaration against Wiradjuri was an extraordinary act in the history of the Australian Frontier Wars.

The proclamation stated that “summary justice has become necessary” and authorised the “use of arms against the Natives beyond the ordinary rule of law in the time of peace.”

Attorney-General Saxe Bannister recorded that
“many blacks, men, women, and children, had been killed.”

The Sydney Gazette described Bathurst and its surrounding vicinity as being
“engaged in an exterminating war.”

Two hundred years later, to the day, on 14 August 2024, we gathered again on Country for Dhuluny Corroboree. We celebrated survival, resistance, connection to Country and healing.

The video is a tiny insight of this monumental ceremony and shows me singing in Wiradjuri language for the women as they dance softly and prepare the ceremonial ground for our gathering.

Two hundred years later, we are still here.

Still singing.
Still dancing.
Still gathering.
Still singing up Country.

So grateful I can stand on Wahluu and sing strong.
Wiradjuri Nation strong.
Wahluu is strong.

I can’t make this post without acknowledging Wirrabee Aunty Leanna Carr, the whole team at @wtocwac and the community that gathered on this day to honour our survival.

I was up at 4am to sing this on @nitv_au at sunrise, and send it up and down the east coast!

I was so happy Uncle @archieroachmusic got to see us honour him and the birth trees that built this Country (!!!!) This is the @bowandarrowland blues version of “A Child Was Born Here” and together, we resound the message within his song, that women and Country are sacred!

Recently I had a dear friend message and say they needed to hear my voice to get them through the day… I happened to be here so I put them in my pocket at this gig and sent them this lil lifeboat…
