My strongest sensation, two weeks now since cancer somehow extinguished the life of my dear teammate, friend, and brother Ricardo Palomares Gonzalez, is numbing bewilderment. Because as anyone who knew Ricardo would attest, across every mesmerizing dimension of his unbelievable, storied existence on this Earth, Ric was so palpably bursting with life that to think he could suddenly possess none at all…I am all darkness and quiet confusion.

But thankfully, the light which arises from thinking back on our time together is warm and has many glowing sides. Let me recount a few.

Of the immeasurable wisdom and countless blessings bestowed upon me by the insane 21-month 18,000 mile globe-spanning cycling journey that was Pedal South, highest among them do I rank the utterly unique bonds I created with my teammates, Thomas, Riley, and Ricardo. There are few relationships that can survive the duration and repetition of gnarly hardcore shit we faced. Romances can fade, friends can take some time apart, but we were bound together, for better and worse, in our undying team goal to capture and share this glorious adventure we were experiencing, and to all make it safely to the end.

And in that patient, incremental way, through sleeping huddled together side-by-side for hundreds of sweltering hot or shivering cold nights, through cooking every delicious and terrible meal for one another, through crying over lost loves, telling all our best stories, playing hours and hours of dice, laughing at each other’s ridiculous mistakes, I became family with someone from a completely different upbringing than my own. How lucky I am for that.

Ric and I clashed many times, especially in the beginning. What I saw as Ricardo’s blunt directness—in a too-sharp interview question or an imposing direct request to a hopeful roadside host—didn’t sit well with my then more polite, terrified-to-impose, W.A.S.P.Y. sensibilities. But it didn’t take long once we entered Latin America for me to experience and witness in Ricardo’s every interaction, that what people desire most when they kindly welcome a traveler into their home and offer them warm food is NOT timidity and...*cont. in comments* taken in Iceland by @dyarbentz

RIP David Hockney

I’d been vaguely aware of David Hockney’s more famous paintings for some time, but in 2019 I found & purchased a beautiful large book titled “Hockney, On Art” at my favorite 2nd hand vintage store in Santa Fe, and it was in these pages that I received a full breakdown of his artistic influences, process & philosophy and, most important of all, his far lesser known experimental photographic work.

Toying around with a then newly released Polaroid instant film camera one night, Hockney created a new photographic medium he called “Joiners”. Inspired by cubism, it consisted of capturing any number of small detailed images of a scene and then collaging them together in a purposefully rough and at times disjointed manner.

I’m greatly drawn to art forms which emulate the hazy, shifting, piecemeal nature of how our memory works, tiny moments and details and snippets of a scene or person or place jostling for prominence within our recollection. Time shifting between the disparate parts, as nothing in life is truly experienced in one singular pause of a moment.

I began right away attempting Joiners of my own, taking immense pleasure in quickly identifying the various parts comprising a scene, almost randomly capturing whatever intuitively felt right. And I often find in this practice that just one individual detail image from amidst the creative attempt was all I really needed to earnestly render the moment.

Going to share a few Joiners of my own. Here’s “Petra”, featuring Petra, who runs @steinasafnpetru “Petra’s Stone Collection” in Stöðvarfjordur, Iceland.

The first in a maternity shoot series for my dear friend, Sam Anderson.

“Part 1: Life with Forward Motion

A snapshot of life at 36 weeks pregnant, back by the water I once ran along daily. In those days, I would envision a future life in a big city, career-focused, no child in sight. Today I dream of a life back in this smaller city, community focused, with a little one running next to me. Life has brought a lot of twists and turns recently, but has also brought a restorative and grounded focus.

Having this moment captured by an artist I am lucky to call a longtime friend has been so special. Take a moment today to tell a friend you cherish them.
