“Menuet” in A minor (RCT 1, No. 9) from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Premier livre de pièces de clavecin”

“The menuet, a dance form popular in the European courts of the 17th and 18th centuries, typically features a graceful and stately triple meter. Rameau’s “Menuet in A minor” exemplifies these qualities while adding his unique flair for harmonic innovation and contrapuntal complexity.”

“In 1706, when the Premier Livre was published, Rameau was relatively unknown. A friend of Louis Marchand, he had recently moved to Paris to establish himself as a composer.”

Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Gigue en Rondeau” in E minor is part of two contrasting dance movements (No. 3 in E minor and No. 4 in E major) from his collection “Pièces de clavecin avec une méthode” (Suite in E minor, RTC 2).

Published in 1724, this piece blends the driving compound meter (6/8) of a traditional gigue with the recurring refrain structure of the French rondeau.

“Dispensing with the usual sarabande, Rameau goes straight into a pair of Gigues. The first is in the minor mode with a plaintive quality, which contrasts with the triumphal mood of the major-key second Gigue. Both are in rondeau form, and the second one sees Rameau introducing a variety of contrasting characters in the alternating couplets. This is the kind of music that transforms the double-manual harpsichord into a wellspring of colour and timbre.“

Here’s Rameau’s Tambourin on harpsichord! Recorded in church for the stellar acoustics.

Sounds better than on piano, doesn’t it?

Mr. J. Duphly’s Tendre rondeau; soft, graceful, and full of melancholy.

Hope it brings some calm to your hearts.

This is an original piece I wrote in the French Rondeau form, designed for beginners to practice playing and improvising over.

Let me know what you think!
