I have zero frame of reference for expressing how fundamentally changed I feel in this moment. And so, I’m not going to try. They don’t make words, or at the very least, I do not have them. What I am going to do is talk about how fucking special you are, because that I can do at length.

My mother spent my entire life doing everything she could to make me feel 12 feet tall. Every plate of food I ever cooked was the best she’d ever tasted, every joke I ever told was the funniest thing she’d ever heard, every goal, hit, or catch was her favorite highlight. Every mistake I made was a stepping stone, a chance to lend a hand and pick me back up. There was no achievement too small or problem too large for mom to celebrate or solve.

For as long as I can remember you allowed me the space to be Dylan. Whether it was listening to The Silence in Black and White on repeat in the car on the way to jr. high, letting me skateboard all across town, listening to me practice drums or embracing whatever new and enlightened version of me came home from Denton every Christmas, you never once looked to dim my light. Instead, you’d amplify it and take the opportunity to show the world—usually through unsightly photos posted to Facebook.

I can’t get the sound of your little fucking snort laugh out of my head. What a blessing to have been able to hear it so often and so freely. You were the weirdest, coolest, funniest and most loving person I’ve ever met. You were scared of your own shadow, but also braver than you ever truly understood. You shouldered every burden the world, and the people around you, could muster with a level of poise, grace, humility and strength that I can only hope to half-possess in this moment.

You didn’t just move mountains for us, you were our mountain. The highest peak. I love you. I love you. I love you. I will love you and carry you with me every day for as long as I live and I will make sure that whatever mark I am blessed to leave on the world around me reflects the love, patience and compassion you gave to me unconditionally. I am proud, honored and eternally grateful to be your son and I hope you always knew that.

Every time I talk to people about my wedding the first thing I keep getting asked is what my favorite part was. So here it is:

Looking at my beautiful wife. For the better part of 11 years I’ve been blessed to look at her in my best moments, my worst moments and in the moments that aren’t of much note. Lord, and my questionable eyesight willing, I can’t wait to do it for the rest of my life. by @dylancatherman

Chaplin, Chappy, ChipDip, Chippers, Chompers, Big Bug, Stinkerton, Chapplebottom, Sweet Boy.

12 years doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of "enough time." I remember the day we picked him up, we stopped at McDonald's on the way home and he ate a small order of french fries for dinner. I had no fucking clue what I was doing. Through so many apartments, houses, roommates, shows, hours away for work, hours away for school, road trips, and life stages, Chaplin gave me nothing but unconditional love and grace. I wish I had been more equipped to be a good dog-dad earlier on in our lives, navigating your 20s with a small sidekick is recommended for you, but not always for them.... but whether I was working late, staying out, drunk, depressed or anything in-between, he was just happy to see me. There are countless things I would do differently if given the chance. What an angel he was. It's so easy to dwell on the things I wish I had done better, but I know that at the end of the day, he knows he was so deeply loved and cherished by us.

I am so beyond thankful to Victoria, our family, our friends and everyone who got the chance to feel the light that emanated off of this little guy.

I will forever miss the sound of his little feet, our wrestling matches and him sneezing to let me know he didn't mean it. To say this feels unfair is an understatement.

My constant for 12 years.

Unfortunately, the cost of a dog as great as Chaplin is the Earth-shattering heart break I feel right now.

I stopped playing baseball when I was like 10 or 11 years old. I hated standing in the outfield squinting to watch the ball, my head bobbled like a dashboard ornament when I ran and in all my plate appearances, I might have swung the bat a handful of times, at most. Until about 3 to 4 years ago, I had been to a single professional baseball game when I was 8 and Alex Rodriguez was on the Rangers. We sat in the nose bleeds, it was unbearably hot and they lost, handedly. When I first moved to Denton, I watched the Rangers lose the World Series twice in a row. Save for MLB Slugfest 2003, baseball had been a consistently bleak experience for me.

Then I found Sandlot… or it found me. Hard to say, really. But what I know is that in the time since I first took the field with the Sheeple to being invited to represent the All Hats at the first ever Sandlot Revolution Summit this past weekend, baseball has brought more community, light, perspective, excitement, friendship, passion and purpose to my life than damn near anything else I’ve ever done. Getting to meet people from all over North America who recognize the same magic that I feel here, in their own cities on their own fields, was nothing short of inspiring. Thankful doesn’t begin to scratch the surface, but it’s the best I have at the moment. So, thank you @hardboot, @sandlotrevolution, @thelongtimetexas, @thewishingwellfield, @dba_jacksanders, @camp_digital and especially @pf_flyers for making this weekend of friendship, learning, community and baseball possible. Sandlot fucking rules.

You accumulate a lot of baseballs over three years of playing Sandlot and few of them means as much to me as this one. After starting a team with some of my favorite people in the world, this first pitch ball from the first @allhatsbaseball game represents months of work, planning, practices and community. An unbelievably large thank you to everyone who came together to make this team, this game and this season possible.
