The day I put in the silver grain filler for the back and sides was the day Ace Frehley died. I thought that was quite the coincidence.

I’d like to thank my roommates for putting up with the reek full weeks of lacquer permeating the house

Goal was a grey silvery burst and I mostly got it I think by @dylanlammie

Hammering in the frets proved difficult into the ebony board. Definitely will invest in some better tools to make that process easier down the line. After carving all the contours on the body and routing out the pockets for the electronics, pickups and binding the guitar was finally prepared for the arduous finishing process. Had to make sure the strings lined up straight with the neck and pull pins on pickups first though. Luckily I was able to make small adjustments to line things up properly by @dylanlammie

Flattening and shaving down the neck was easily the most satisfying part of the build. Being able to actually see what the grain will look like after pealing back the rough surface is its own reward. A sharp spokeshave makes quick work.

I didn’t have a specific profile in mind for the neck I just knew that based on what @itstessanderson said in the past it had to be on the thin side so I just carved and sanded everything back and forth until it felt good to me.

Most telecasters have a nut width of around 42-42.5mm but I decided to sand it down to 43.5mm to have a bit of forgiveness in case I had issues with the nut or fret dressing

Line up the fret markers and sand a fretboard to a 12ā€radius

After the neck was mostly sculpted and centred in the neck pocket I was able to locate exactly where the bridge need to be installed on the body. Since I was using a smaller scale length I had to (very) carefully measure a bunch of times to make sure I would have proper intonation. I used a simple geometry kit and protractor to make everything straight and perpendicular by @dylanlammie

Now that the neck was attached to the body I needed to route out a channel for the truss rod. I didn’t have any straight lines to reference so I had to make a jig that would line up dead centre.

Adding a flame maple cap to the headstock to intentionally fix what was definitely not a mistake but a deliberate and intended ā€œbeautificationā€

The truss rod access was made from walnut doweling that I had to drill through exactly centre. I fashioned up another jig to hold a really long drill bit at an angle so it wouldn’t catch and gauge the headstock. This and gluing the fretboard was rather stressful and had no room for error so when in doubt I made sure to have plenty of clamps available

After tracing out the body shape from a template and sanding down the sides, I had to figure out how I was going to attach the neck to the body centred without having any straight lines to reference from the neck.

Luckily around the same time I happened to befriend local luthier @hankbuddguitars and he was pivotal in the build with great advice and tips to pay attention to first to save time and potential problems down the line. Using his CNC machine he was able to make a bunch of templates for future builds as well as a centred custom neck pocket that was lined up perfectly to the taper I had to work with on this rough cut neck blank.

Always test on scrap first

Thanks again @hankbuddguitars everyone should check out your work! by @dylanlammie

Now that I don’t have to keep it a secret from the internet and @itstessanderson I can start sharing photos from back in June of when I started making this guitar! After watching countless hours of YouTube videos from different builders I finally had the audacity to think to myself ā€œyeah I could probably do thatā€

It all started out as rough lumber I’ve had since high school. The body is 2 piece ash with a book matched flame maple top. The birds-eye maple neck was already rough cut to a ā€œT Styleā€ shape without a truss rod channel and the ebony fretboard was one that I had hand marked and cut to to a 25ā€ scale length in grade 11. by @dylanlammie

Back in September @dylanlammie was an absolute hero and drove all the way out to Kelowna to rescue us. @turo rented us a lemon churro and left us to fend for ourselves along with all of our band gear in the middle of nowhere. Afterwards, they failed to follow through on their promise to compensate us for travel costs and so here we are, calling them out on social media.

20 min after leaving Kelowna our rental van started leaking transmission fluid all over the highway and quickly became undrivable. After hours of going back and forth with customer service they said they couldn’t find a tow truck to rescue us. We made our own arrangements and a Turo employee promised they would pay for the gas of a friend’s vehicle to come from Vancouver to rescue us. Instead they decided to refund us half the rental - as if getting us out to Kelowna and not back is worth half the fee! We’ve tried talking to them but have gotten nowhere. And then I get an ad about their 24/7 roadside assistance and it actually made me laugh out loud.

Hey @turo you still owe us $380 for gas that we paid for to get ourselves home after you left us stranded in the middle of nowhere with all our band gear.

Friends, do you have a story about how @turo rented you a lemon churro?? Let’s hear it in the comments šŸ‘‡šŸ‹šŸš taken in Brenda Mines, BC by @dylanlammie

@paramore will forever be my favourite to sing, and this one never gets old. If I can one day be even a fraction of the vocalist @yelyahwilliams is, I’ll take that as a major win. Thank you @maddylofvendahl and @dylanlammie for rapidly learning this one - I’m in awe of both of you always.

ā€˜Are we Even Internet Fingerstyle Guitarists if there isn’t a take on Isn’t She Lovely?’ - Dylan Lammie 2024

Two Maton guitars and a first hang, not too shabby. Make sure to stick around for Dylan’s sick solo

He’s also on tour across Canada with his insane band @brasscamel so make sure to give them a follow!
