September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this month will always hold a deeply personal place in my heart. I am a suicide survivor. There were moments when the darkness felt so overwhelming that I truly could not see a way forward. I felt alone, hopeless, and as though there was nowhere left to turn.

But somehow, even in the moments when I could not feel Him, God was still there. Looking back, I can see His hand in so many moments I once thought would be the end of my story. He carried me through places I never thought I would survive and gave me another morning when I wasn’t sure I wanted to see one.

That is why I believe our world desperately needs more empathy. We never truly know what someone is silently carrying. The person smiling beside you, going to work, posting online, or saying they are “fine” may be fighting a battle you could never imagine. A little kindness can go farther than we will ever know. A simple “How are you, really?” can make someone feel seen.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Even in our darkest valleys, we do not walk alone. God has saved me from so many dark spaces where I felt there was nowhere left to go, and I am grateful every day that I am still here.

If you are struggling, please know this: your story is not over. You are not a burden. You are not too far gone. Your life has value, even when you cannot see it yourself. Please hold on.

This September, I hope we practice more empathy, speak more gently, and love people more deeply. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply make someone feel seen. You never know whose life your kindness may touch. 🤍 taken in Raleigh, North Carolina by @dylanloznicka
