“Dear Jess” 2nd year denim project

This piece begins with the loss of my grandmother, an architect and abstract artist whose work shaped the way I see form, structure and inspired my creative journey. One year after her passing, I returned to her lines, colours, and transformed them through my own practice.

This work is a study of grief as a catalyst: how loss reshapes us, re-aligns us, and invites us to carry forward what we once received.

The jacket utilises a circle-cut drape, carved with intricate seam lines that echo the rhythms of her brushstrokes and the precision of her architectural drafts. Every stitch is a dialogue between her world and mine; a reminder that when people leave, their ideas continue to breathe through us.

Look 1: THE TRAPPER

This piece explores my conflicted relationship with fur in fashion; something I’ve always found deeply beautiful, rich in history, and symbolic of power, however, that beauty is tangled with the violence of how fur is so often sourced. I wanted to question that tension: can we still celebrate fur while demanding ethical responsibility?

I approached this jacket as a proposition. The silhouette is inspired by the natural shapes of fur hides and the jean pockets are inspired by hoof prints left behind by slaughtered animals. Instead of traditional materials, I constructed the jacket from denim that’s been waxed, hand-painted, and coated with a hydrophobic seal, imitating the texture of leather or hide but is an entirely fabricated a denim alternative that speaks to both artifice and intention.

The fur used here comes only from animals already used for food, nothing was killed solely for the material. I believe if we are going to use animals, we must use the whole animal, with reverence and without waste.

There’s something unsettling about the piece, and that’s deliberate. I want to hold space for the discomfort. For me, it’s about reclaiming value from systems of excess and questioning what luxury can become when it’s stripped of cruelty

BURBERRY RE-IMAGINED
Beginning the brief, I looked at Burberry’s trench coat as a garment rooted in function, yet constantly evolving through culture and time. For this project I redefined it not as a symbol of wartime struggle, but as a transformed object reflecting elegance, artistic liberation and expression. I was drawn to historical military dress that prioritised symbolism over practicality, such as Napoleon jackets, merging this with the trench’s utilitarian origins. This hybrid language between restraint and ornamentation became a central theme, influenced within 60s and 70s counterculture, worn by artists as a symbol of rebellion and creative independence, reframing the coat as an evolving form shaped by those who reclaim it.

Emerging student fashion designer, @killdyl.vol2, channeled the passing of his grandmother int his design process when crafting this masterpiece he handed in for his denim project as part of @menswear_lcf_ba’s modules.

As an “architect and abstract artist”, Dylan’s grandma was someone who, in his words, “shaped the way I see form, structure and inspired my creative journey.” and with the events which unfolded, inspired the piece he aptly named, “Dear Jess”.

There’s something truly beautiful about the way in which designers like Dylan are influenced by stories they hold close to their hearts, creating a such a large impact sentimentally, whilst producing garments that wow.
