Im surprised more guys arent using low voltage christmas lights.

We had a ton of GFI issues on bushes and trees last year.

This year we’re switching those to S4’s 120v NXG lights with the couplers. But their low voltage stuff caught my attention too.

* guys ive talked to say they cut and their 24v lights while they’re on without tripping the breaker. They like seeing everything lit while working so it’s MORE efficient than 110v installs

* fewer rain related GFI headaches. Literally ZERO trips

* depending how its wired, damage can stay limited to one section. With 110v, one squirrel bites it and the entire display can go down at once

* not a huge investment - the same socket wire, same extension wire, same. Switching the bulbs and minis and adding transformers is all that’s needed

Negatives - Big installs DO need multiple transformers more planning.

But guys ive talked to in Florida say switching made a huge difference in callbacks. Landscaper cuts a tree wire. Now all the damage is limited to that one tree.
The rest of their display works perfectly.

Anybody using S4’s 24v stuff? What did switching cost and whats the downside im missing? by @dylthor

Unpopular opinion: you don’t have to charge $12–$15 a foot like all the gurus tell you. I know guys charging $2–$3 who make great money.

The key is, if you’re going to charge low, you have to build the entire business around charging low.

Easy rooflines. No wet metal, tile, cedar, steep roofs, or complicated layouts. No bushes or trees. Warm white on every install. Everything labeled for next year. Fewer callbacks, and most of the materials already paid for when customers return.

Take a 175-foot front roofline in Seattle. At $3 a foot, that’s $525. Five of those in a day is $2,625. Pay one installer 15% and he makes about $394, or $49 an hour over eight hours.

With the right jobs and tight routes, those numbers can work. You still have to cover takedown, maintenance, overhead, and materials, but there’s room to make money.

Nobody’s saying to do a steep cedar roof for $3 a foot. You have to turn down jobs that don’t fit and stick with the model all the way through.

What’s wrong with a well-paid guy knocking out simple installs and the company making good money? Why does every house supposedly need to be $12–$15 a foot? by @dylthor
