#TBT My first ever Dhol.

I got this when I was around 10 years old and refurbed it when I was 14 at home, completely self taught.

I didn’t have the money for an electric sander or things like that at that age. I remember going to Wickes to buy sheets of sand paper and a small can of paint stripper with the money I saved up from my part time job. I’d brush the paint stripper onto the dhol then scrape it off with a random scraper I found in the garage (which didn’t do a whole lot 😂), then getting the sandpaper sheets, ripping them in half, wrapping it round a tennis ball and sanding the paint off the whole thing by hand in the downstairs back room of my house. Fair to say my Mum wasn’t happy with the mess on the carpet or the layer of dust and paint that covered the room for days.. but she was supportive 😂.

This took some real graft at that age, and trying to work out so many different things for the first time, finishing the wood, learning about wood filler, certain ways to put things back together but better than before.. and we got there 💪🏽.

Regretfully (looking back at it) I sold this drum shortly after for around £100 (which felt like £1,000 when you’re 14) but it found its way back to me and I purchased it back in 2024 in the exact same condition that I sold it in, to the T. Same marks, tape on the bass skin, tears, rope design near the bass, the lot - even the laptop strap was still on it that I robbed from my Mums laptop bag she used for work 😂😂. Everything is exactly as I left it and how I remember it being back in 2011.

Proper nostalgia 🔥 One drum I could never part with now and don’t think I would ever change, repair or refurb.
This is where my Dhol and the whole repair / refurb journey both began 🙌🏽

DYNAMIC DHOL REPAIRS

A bit of background to the page -

My name’s @paviteratwal - Founder and manager of @dynamicdrummers.

I first picked up the Dhol nearly 20 years ago and have been building, repairing and refurbishing Dhol’s for the past 16 years on more of a ‘if you know, you know’ basis, taking exceptional pride in my work.

I’ve collected 15+ plus Dhol’s over the years for my personal collection, including folk Dhol’s, UK style straight barrels, double hooked live performance Dhols, Pakistani Sufi Dhols, and many more, as well as other Punjabi folk instruments.

Building, refurbishing, repairing and maintaining Dhol’s to a high standard has always been a huge passion of mine, paying attention to detail and giving the instrument the proper respect it needs and deserves.

This page is to document a bunch of my Dhol builds, repairs and refurbishments for my own collection, as well as showcasing the work done on the drums of my customers, and any future work too.

Another reason is because I’ve seen a lot of poorly maintained Dhol’s in the UK, and also the standard of workmanship from a lot of others who claim to repair and build Dhol’s and it’s becoming concerning, with several Dhols coming to me for repairs or maintenance after being poorly worked on by others. There are a handful of amazing Dhol craftsmen in the UK, but I’m finding that there are also a lot of ‘cowboys’ too, charging customers for poor workmanship and being content with it, in turn ruining the art and respect for the instrument, which holds an amazingly rich deep-rooted history.

After years of being told to make a social media page to showcase my work and craftsmanship, I’ve finally decided to go ahead with it.
