POSTS STORIES REELS

I've been postponing sharing my top 5 Lessons Learnt as we're actively pushing the vision with the children at Chocolate Africa Classical Guitar Academy. The last 265 days have taught me things no book ever could.

𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞; 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.

Like, training children, regardless of their background, to have access to quality music education using Classical Guitar as a tool, all for 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄, will humble you quickly.

It has taught me to listen more, share credit freely, and put purpose above self.
These children have changed me.
The responsibility has changed me.
And the vision is clearer than ever.

P.S: This journey also inspired What If, a song that asks the same questions I’ve had to wrestle with along the way: https://theoreoluwadavid.com/what-if

BEETHOVEN: Fur Elise in West African Style Rhythm style.

Our students at the Academy in Lagos wanted something different, a break from the usual repertoire and its original rhythm. They asked for music that feels like home: playful, energetic, and full of that unmistakable West African groove.

Taiwo Adegoke’s arrangement of Für Elise with West African Rhythm

I have flipped the familiar melody into something fresh, fun, and uniquely West African. The students have already started rehearsing it as one of their combined pieces for the upcoming concert on 18th December

We’re trading the traditional version for something happier, bouncier, and full of life and the energy is infectious.

If you love this little practice snippet, follow us for more updates and mark your calendar for the concert on 18th December.

Bonus: The sheet music for this Guitar Ensemble arrangement is available!

Greetings from all the children in Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬

🇳🇬 CANTARAM COMIGO
🇳🇬 THEY SANG ALONG

🇳🇬 During my brief time in Angola and Nigeria, I realized that in those cultures, musical instruments are almost never performed alone. They either accompany singing or dancing, often for ritual purposes. But I maintain that new experiences are always enriching, as I believe a solo guitar recital would have been for the people I played for.
This song, "Orin Ibeji," is traditional to the Yoruba tribe of southern Nigeria. They were the predominant ethnic group among the audience present at this intimate concert for the school community of the Chocolate Africa Classical Guitar Academy. It's a melody you sing along to with a pregnant woman when you wish her to have twins. Recognizing the song, those present spontaneously began to sing it. I was then surprised, and I confess that I even lost my concentration a little for a moment 😄 The good thing about these memories is that they are neither lost nor spoiled. This one stays with me until the end of my days. Or until the end of my sanity. by @dynamix_concept
