It’s Official: October is Youth Justice Action Month, a time to recognize the importance of uplifting young people and the communities that support them.

At DYRS, we join partners nationwide in honoring the resilience, strength, and potential of our youth. This month is a reminder of the value of listening to young people and creating spaces where they feel supported and heard.

We remain committed to encouraging youth voices and helping young people build strong foundations for their futures.

NEW: Today, DYRS Director Sam Abed and the General Counsel’s Office joined DC Councilmember Zachary Parker for a public roundtable on the proposed regulations that guide how decisions are made when concerns arise for young people in our care.

We appreciated the thoughtful discussion and the perspectives shared by advocates, families, and community members. As Director Abed noted, “The goal… is to establish a framework that ensures that youth are treated fairly and that they receive the best outcome for the youth and the community.”

DYRS remains committed to community safety, transparency, and building a process the public can trust. by @dyrsdc

JUST IN — Community partnerships are what bring balance. DYRS Director Sam Abed, Deputy Director of Secure Programs Trina Lyles, Chief Integrity Officer S. Eubanks, and Jenise “Mama Jo” Patterson of Parent Watch came together in a shared effort.

We are thrilled to have an ongoing collaboration that helps bridge the gap between government, community stakeholders, and pioneers. We believe that strong working relationships build safer, stronger infrastructure that allows us to serve and thrive.

Parent Watch is a DC‑based advocacy organization that protects parental and youth rights, offers rapid crisis response, and empowers families.

“Mama Jo” attributes the following quote to the great work that Parent Watch has been committed to for decades: “Heal a Parent, Heal a Child, Heal a Family.” by @dyrsdc

Today, our DYRS executive team joined the Elders Council for a powerful and thoughtful training focused on strengthening how we engage youth and families. Guided by community leaders, we reflected on the Sankofa principle and the importance of understanding where we have been so we can move forward with purpose.

We talked about seeing parents as vital partners in a young person’s success. Parents influence their children deeply, and our role as an agency is to make sure families feel supported, respected, and included at every step. Trust grows when we listen, communicate clearly, and follow through.

The team also explored strategies to build a healthier organizational culture. Transparency, accountability, and meaningful participation from staff and community members were at the center of this discussion. We lifted up real stories, acknowledged past challenges, and focused on staying consistent in our commitment to improvement.

We left the training encouraged and ready to continue working alongside parents, youth, and our community partners. Building strong relationships takes time, but together we can create a system where every family feels heard and valued.

The Fields at RFK Campus were full of energy as DYRS’ 4th Annual Back2School event brought families together for backpacks, uniforms, books, free haircuts, and community resources. The event is part of DYRS’ continued efforts to support young people and connect them with the resources, relationships, and opportunities they need to succeed in school and in their communities. Big thanks to our partners and volunteers for helping DC youth start the school year prepared and confident. @dcdmpsj @dccfsa @dchumanserv

Setting students up for success, one fantastic event at The Fields at a time. ✏️🌟

We had 1,000 DC students and their families visit The Fields at RFK for @DYRSDC’s annual Back-2-School event, where they gave away free backpacks, haircuts, school supplies, and more. 📚

Families also connected with 12 government agencies, community partners, and local schools who were onsite to help them put their best foot forward this school year.

Looking for somewhere to hold your next event? Learn more about renting space at The Fields at RFK at the link in our bio.
