Frontiers of Solitude
HOMEOSTASIS – A JOURNEY NORTH
Symposium: October 2. until 17. / Flutgraben

Homeostasis – A Journey North is a documentary about the interdisciplinary project “Frontiers of Solitude”. This international event conducted during the years 2015-16 was an inquiry of the ongoing transformations of landscape and the interconnections between post-industrial civilization and nature. These topics were elaborated in the framework of cultural geography and morphology of three selected areas In Czech Republic, Island and Norway. The project included expeditions, residencies, workshops and exhibitions in the above mentioned countries. “Homeostasis” was composed from various video and audio materials captured during the expedition Into the Abyss of Lignite Clouds in North Bohemia between 2015 and 2016.

The Frontiers of Solitude website was created in 2015 as part of the international year-long project Na pomezí samoty, which included participants from the Czech Republic, Iceland.
An exhibition catalogue includes documentary videos and sound recordings, texts on contemporary art, ecology and the environmental sciences. Participating artists: Finnur Arnar Arnarson, Karlotta Blöndal, Peter Cusack, Gunhild Enger, Þórunn Eymundardóttir, Iselin Linstad Hauge, Monika Fryčová, Elvar Már Kjartansson, Alena Kotzmannová, Vladimír Merta, Pavel Mrkus, Greg Pope, Kristín Rúnarsdóttir, Ivar Smedstad, Miloš Šejn, Vladimír Turner, Robert Vlasák, Diana Winklerová, Martin Zetová.
The project was a joint initiative of the Školská 28 Gallery (Deai/setkání), the Atelier Nord, and the Skaftfell Center for Visual Art, and was supported by grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants.

“Latenz” aims to disrupt the illusion of synchronicity between sound and image in everyday media constructions, shifting attention to the space between event and reaction, where cause and effect merge into new contexts. The digital space of “Latenz” suspends temporal states such as past, present, and future: a vocal event occurs in the now while simultaneously being archived, creating a doubling of reality in which the human body loses its relevance as a point of reference for privacy and agency. Instead, it becomes significant only as a continuous producer of data disintegrating into individual data fragments that are collected and reconnected to generate new meanings. Dialogical, and thus social, relationships are increasingly initiated and mediated through technology, while the permeable membrane of the technical device serves as the interface between offline and online worlds.

Verena Lercher’s artistic practice centres on a techno-cognitive engagement with artificial voice-sound phenomena to construct vocal identities as a poetic navigation between the private and public, the human and the technological, the body and the algorithm. Her work has been presented internationally, including at the New York Electronic Music Festival, Kontakte Festival Berlin, steirischer herbst Graz, EXIT-club Glasgow, and the Singapore Art Museum. Research fellowships have also taken her to Tokyo, Bangalore, and Chicago. In 2025, she completed her PhD entitled “Sounding Out Identities of Artificial Voice.”

Queer Carnival, Club Culture and Community: Finding Belonging in the Bassline Finding Belonging in the Bassline
GINs presentation at the simposium explores the meaning of community, collaboration, and club culture through the lens of QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) in London, and reflects on how soundsystems, Carnival, and club spaces become sites of resistance, care, sexuality, visibility and survival.

DJ Set 10 pm
GIN’s upbeat set shaped by the pace and energy of London’s Black Queer dancefloors will weave in high energy genres of music from Boyoun, Soca, Dancehall, to Bounce, Broken-beat, Footwork and electronic music. Influenced by Carnival Soundsystems, and London Queer Nightlife, the performance serves as both a release and a containment of cultural memory, tracing the relationship between Caribbean musical traditions, rave and club culture, and queer diasporic life in London in its varied and beautiful forms.

GIN is a seasoned event producer and community organiser with over a decade of experience shaping inclusive, transformative nightlife spaces. They are the co-founder of multiple groundbreaking projects, including Black Obsidian Sound System, Sex and Rage, and Faggamuffin Bloc Party which is one of the UK’s first openly queer sound systems at Carnival. Across all of these platforms, GIN’s mission remains clear: to create spaces and collectives rooted in QTBIPOC liberation and cultural innovation.

A Body Like A Home

A Body Like a Home is a sonic memoir where songs and poems map the fraught terrains of trauma, recovery, and love. At the heart of the album is Cárdenas’s voice—part witness, part confessor—over layers of electric guitar, electronic textures, and evocative field recordings; channelling years of turbulence—intergenerational scars left by colonialism, racism, domestic violence, and alcoholism—into a work that oscillates between brutality and tenderness.

Alejandra Cárdenas is a Peruvian-born artist. She began her career in Lima’s underground music scene in the 2000s. Her work encompasses various formats such as live shows, albums, multimedia artworks and research. Her live performances, under the moniker Ale Hop, merge the physical qualities of sound with raw affective states. She builds layers of sound by maneuvering an intricate repertoire of electric guitar techniques to create music of deep intensity.

The Emotional Technician
Radio Docu-Fiction by and with @iazminil
The emotional technician walks through the programs of the exhibition as an observer, creating an experiential audio documentary of the festival. The emotional technician is questioning art, cries in installations, checks the sentimental temperature of all art workers, and appears rather unexpectedly in the purgatory between being audience and artist herself.

Yasmeen Al-Qaisi is a poet who writes for voice and paper, articulates and performs language with sound, food or care practices towards uncontainable forms of literature. When writing with sound, Yasmeen shape-shifts in inexistant institutional forms, invents jobs, engages in human and more than human relations and broadcasts temporarily or mobile on free and public radios.

Dis-inhabit Listening: Territory, Conviviality and Conflict
Des-habitar Escutas (Dis-inhabit Listening) is a research and artistic creation project carried out between 2023 and 2024 by Brazilian artists and researchers Lílian Campesato and Valéria Bonafé in the region known as Cracolândia (Crackland), in downtown São Paulo. The project resulted in a series of sound, audiovisual, and installation works.
On 17.10. at Flutgraben, the artists will present and speak about the film during the symposium.
The work can also be seen at the Symposium Exhibition, from Oct 14th to Oct 17th, 2 to 7 pm.
