The Brunswick 40 'Helmsman' - the latest release from Fears I had the pleasure of helping introduce to the world.

I've had the opportunity to be involved in several of @fearswatches latest launches, each piece presenting different contours, colours and textures to the last, and therefore demanding a unique approach for every shoot. The Helmsman was no exception - as the first Fears piece to be fully brushed across the entire case, it required significantly more muted and diffused lighting than I normally use to truly capture the matte effect of the finishing when observed in person.

The bright white dial and sailcloth strap contrast very dramatically with the more muted case and while the Helmsman is by all accounts a Brunswick, for this reason it was perhaps the most unique Fears piece I've shot so far.

What are your thoughts on this release? Are you a fan of the new nautical look?

The Seiko 1/100th Second Speedtimer

I'll admit it - I'm a bit of a mechanical snob. Seeing "quartz" in the spec sheet of an attractive watch almost always spoils that attraction for me. However, solar movements are an odd exception.

Solar movements give me a similar type of excitement that mechanicals do, I think in large part because there's an element of "aliveness" that both share. A standard battery powered quartz watch is indifferent to you - wearing it or not, it chugs along anyway. Meanwhile, both solar and mechanical watches come alive when you use them, and slowly grind to a halt when you don't. It's a sort of symbiosis.

For this reason, against all odds, this Seiko solar chronograph has managed to become one of my most worn watches this year. It also happens to be a very fun piece to shoot.

P.S. apparently a lot of people now offload all their typing to LLMs - so I guess I have to declare that every word in this post is fully typed by hand, by me, and always will be.

The Fears Brunswick 1846

This commemorative piece from Fears is the perfect marriage between pocket watch and wristwatch, and I had the privilege to shoot it for this year's British Watchmaker's Day.

It would be a lie to say I wasn't excited seeing some of my work at the show earlier this month, but what I'm even more excited for is where I'll take my watch videography in the near future.

The Seiko SRPG35K1

It's been ~3.5 months since I got my first professional camera, and in that time I've learned more about photography and videography than I had in the last 2 years since I started with my Google Pixel 6.

As a little tribute to my smartphone photography days, I recently revisited a shot of this same Seiko from 2024 - now on a Nikon D800 and proper studio lighting.

A 1940s Omer - scuffs, dents, faded radium and all.

Vintage watches are perhaps the greatest example of why I love horology. In an age of endlessly mass manufactured disposable products, vintage watches/clocks remind us that old does not mean obsolete.

Some recent shots of @hilliwatches 's debut sports chrono. I had a slight bias toward their reverse panda as a lover of dark monochrome colours, but their other colourways were equally fun to shoot. Go check them out!

The Seiko Prospex 1/100th second chronograph - a watch I was initially put off by with its unorthodox design and dial layout, and in the end it was the design that stuck with me and eventually turned it into one of my favourite watches as of late.

My most recent, and proudest photoshoot so far.

Featuring the latest mod I've introduced to Towers Watches, the "1950", this is the most premium looking custom Casio I've made so far, so I felt inclined to put extra effort into the photography for this one.

I went into this photoshoot with a "no compromises" attitude. "I'll take as long as I need to" turned into nearly 2 weeks of being hunched over this watch, trying every position, angle and lighting setup possible.

Some several hundred shots later (many of which were of the same shot re-taken a hundred times), I can say I'm pretty happy with the results.

Making custom Casio watches is only 40% of the fun for me. The other 60% is the photography.

What if Casio made a watch inspired by the original 1984 Macintosh 128K?

Some shots from my latest Casio A100WE "Macintosh" mod, featuring a hand-notched 20 mm leather strap in beige and negatively polarized display. The off-white colour of the watchface, square shape and black display made me think of the original 1984 Macintosh, so I think it'd be quite fitting to nickname this mod by the same name!

Yesterday I attended my first British Watchmakers Day, and despite barely getting sleep that day and running off of several cappuccinos, I had an amazing time.

It was great getting to know some watch enthusiasts as well as seeing many familiar faces from the last Bristol show. Here's to many more bright years of British Watch & Clock Makers.
