I’m excited to share a “first look” of our film doing the festival rounds. We filmed this about 4 yrs ago. Its not commissioned (not commercial), completely self-funded and was, and still is, a true passion project.

Sara wrote the description:

“In My Alaskan Journey, wildlife camerawoman Erin Ranney explores four unique areas of Alaska’s coast, revealing stunning landscapes and iconic wildlife along the way. Guided by Alaska’s history, her family’s stories, and her own memories, Erin’s journey weaves the past with the present, and paints a hopeful future for the land and wildlife of coastal Alaska.”

I’m so grateful for everyone who helped with this project, our AMAZING team and my family for sharing their stories and making this project possible. I cannot thank my family enough, especially my parents and my aunt and uncle.
Big thanks to @jack_j87 for bringing this to life (from filming to editing to producing to more). This was filmed in the homelands of the Eyak, Lingit Aani (Tlingit), Yup’ik/Cup’ik and Alutiiq (Sugpiaq). For thousands of years these ecosystems and this land has been protected and cared for by these communities. And I am grateful to be a guest on these lands. I encourage everyone to support local indigenous led groups in these areas like @unitedtribesofbristolbay and @defendyakutat who continue to work to protect these areas. by @e.ranney

There were 11 fox kits at this den. I imagine this is probably more than one family but this momma had her hands full each time she came back. Her face said it all.

We think they moved the den under a fisherman's cabin once a bear found it and started digging in. She had her work cut out for her by @e.ranney

Tomorrow I'll be sharing the full (cell phone footage) video of @kodiakislandexpeditions , @joyerlenbach and my hike along the Alaska "Bear Coast" from before the Bristol Bay season.

We only followed bear trails the whole time. It made for a fun adventure. If the bears could do it, we were going to try! We saw so much wildlife, beautiful scenery and all sorts of weather. Plus I couldn't have asked for better company! If you want to learn more about bears, hang out with these two.

When we have a few moments to spare from fishing, we've been spending some time with some little neighbors under one of the cabins. Momma has her hands full.

The Alaska State reported killing nearly 254 brown bears in its aerial gunning program against brown bears in an "effort to improve calf survival among the Mulchatna caribou herd" between 2023 and 2026. Between May 9 and June 7 alone, the state reported shooting 68 bears.

Near the boundary of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, the @alaskawildlifealliance has captured photos and footage of bears that we believe were culled by the State; including a cub.

My family hunts and fishes in Alaska, I'm not opposed to hunting for food. But I am opposed to indiscriminate killing of predators (and their cubs) by the state that is not backed by science.

Is there a huge issue with the Multchatna caribou herd? Yes, 100%! Absolutely. Many communities are struggling and unable to get subsistence caribou because of the declining numbers (not to mention the ever growing food and fuel costs). This is also an extremely important issue that needs to be addressed. Subsistence is key to community.

But the Board is not following the science; they are not scientists. The 'solutions' are not focused on the actual issues instead using bears and wolves as scapegoats for years of poor management and avoiding facing the food and climate issues. And there is a lack in transparency.

The state has spent "$2.18 million on intensive management efforts related to the Mulchatna predator control program from 2023 to 2025- this includes flying a helicopter almost daily, accompanied by two small spotter planes." Do you know how much it is to run those aircrafts each day? I would argue that there are much better programs that money could be spent on. And we need community solutions, that benefit both the wildlife life and local communities.

If you bear view, hunt, fish, film, etc. I would encourage you to use your voice on this issue. by @e.ranney

Stealing some internet to share my friend @kirstenggr new book!

This story is about her journey to and through the @goldengloberace - one of the hardest sailing races in the world- no modern technology, solo, never touching land, around the world. She won the 2022 edition.

There are many things in my life I'm grateful for from Kirsten- she helped me build confidence, learn to sail (though I still need much more practice), is the reason I met my husband, introduced me to her awesome family and dogs and so much more. We've had some great adventures together and she's a dear friend (even on our bad days).

She'll think this is cheesy (she's very humble) but if you want to read about an incredibly inspiring sailor (and human) go order "All Good, K." I'm so proud of her for the race, the book and more.

Hopefully more adventurous soon by @e.ranney

A quick hello after an amazing trip, a shower and then right off to Bristol Bay (and back out of service).

Back from following only bear trails across the coast in both rain AND shine. I couldn't have asked for better company. These are two unbelievably strong and tough women to pack around with- it's been very humbling.

And it's been a very needed adventure- just bears, wolves and other wildlife following the tracks bears have made for decades, if not more. It took us to some pretty amazing places. by @e.ranney

Slight weather delay but a 'win win' because I've been able to get in some much needed visits with my grandparents.

Heading out for a backpacking trip on the coast with 🐻🐺 and two awesome ladies, bear guide Jen and bear biologist Joy. Fingers crossed for decent weather and good wildlife time. First time in a long time I've done a trip like this for fun, and could not be in better company. A big thanks to Jen's husband, Willy, for giving us a ride out to the coast in their Beaver.

Then straight to Bristol Bay for six weeks. It's going to be a much different season than any other but I'm excited.

Clearly I love rockhoppers- I've spent tons of time with colonies filming them for documentaries, we've worked on fencing off the colony on my husband's family farm @portstephens.flk to encourage native plant growth and I have recently felted lots of pictures of them. I'd love to give back to these scrappy penguins, so I've collaborated with South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute for their upcoming project.

This southern summer, @saeri_fi is working to complete a Rockhopper penguin census in the Falkland Islands. They are currently fundraising to support this work. I'll keep you updated on the project over the summer.
