Opening today _The Distance Between a Drill and a Howl_ at @radica_culturesofchange > Masseria Minoia, Conversano, Puglia

The Distance Between a Drill and a Howl is a multidimensional sonic instrument that plays the internet. The work takes the form of a fairground ride: an itinerant machine that travels between cities to provide cheap, temporary thrills. Each degree of freedom of the ride’s motion charts a trajectory through the latent space of a model trained on AudioSet, a massive dataset of sound clips drawn from YouTube videos. The simulation is built in Unreal Engine, which serves as a wrapper for a custom-built sparse autoencoder. The work looks at compression, both as the g-force experienced by the rider, and as the embedding operation in machine learning. by @e__type

Connor Cook @e__type is a media artist and researcher from California, now based in Amsterdam. His work asks how the abstract operations of computation become sensible in the body. Through real-time simulations and hardware interfaces, he designs informatic circuits that stage novel relationships between bodies and machines. His work has recently been shown at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, Prada Frames in Milan, Singapore Art Museum in Singapore, and V-A-C Zattere in Venice.

Riccardo Petrini @richipetrini is a coder and media artist working with ML, custom scripts and game spaces. His work renders the internal, operational logics of computational models perceptible and traversable. Central to his practice is the ongoing development of new workflows, each released as open-source resources or libraries to enable reuse, modification, and extension by others. His work has most recently been exhibited at Pista 500, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, Arsenale, and Palazzo Diedo during the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. He is currently Research Scientist in the Machine Visual Culture: Artificial Intelligence and the History of Seeing group at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History.

Aavistus Festival presents - VJ Connor Cook (NL)

Connor Cook is a media artist and researcher from California, now based in Amsterdam. His work asks how the abstract operations of computation become sensible in the body. Through real-time simulations and hardware interfaces, he designs informatic circuits that stage novel relationships between bodies and machines. His work has been shown at the Eye Filmmuseum, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Prada Frames, Singapore Art Museum, and V-A-C Zattere. Recently, he taught at the Design Academy Eindhoven and was an affiliate researcher with Antikythera, a think-tank in planetary computation.

"BE AGGRESSIVE! is a VJ performance inspired by the machinic spectacle that is competitive cheerleading. The performance is built upon an extensive motion library captured during my time as an athlete on the Dutch national cheerleading team. Using Unreal Engine and Ableton, I sample and remix this library to produce a virtual cheerleading routine. The world mirrors the rich aesthetic excess of the sport: glitter, rhinestones, flashing lights, and fireworks coincide with dynamic configurations of bodies acting as machines. The performance extends and expands the machinic underpinnings of the sport, using the operations of synchronization, discretization, repetition, and collapse as compositional tools."

A few weeks ago, I presented a new work for @nephila.world < first contact > event. BE AGGRESSIVE! is a Turing-complete computer built out of cheerleaders. The project recasts cheerleading as a technological practice, in which bodies synchronize and discretize their movement to execute a routine. Here, virtual cheerleaders render images from the internet using their bodies, creating a performance that emerges from the computational operations of the Brainfuck programming language.

The work runs in real time, fetching images based on user interactions in @freudenheiim work “Surface”, made possible via the just-released @nephila.world operating system.

Here are some images of the work as it was shown at the event. The week before, I also had the opportunity to explore some of the theoretical underpinnings of the research at @bhmpi @machinevisualculture Noisy Systems conference, where I presented a paper exploring Gilbert Simondon’s information theory through the lens of cheerleading. 🤡📣 by @e__type

For the past year, I’ve been developing a new project based on my experience as a member of the Dutch national cheerleading team @teamcheernl . I see cheerleading as a technological practice that transforms bodies into machine components. Through synchronization, coordination, and differentiation, the cheerleading team produces an evolving informatic structure/spectacle also known as a routine.

I’ve developed a workflow that uses Unreal Engine and Ableton Live to create a workflow for real-time avatar animation via MIDI controllers, using motion capture data recorded with members of the Dutch national team.

This video portrait captures a bit of the process. Huge thanks the Creative Industries Fund NL @stimuleringsfonds for both the video and for supporting the development of the work through the Talent Development grant scheme.

Forever grateful to the athletes and coaches of @teamcheernl. Being a member of the team was the highlight of my year, and it was an honor to help grow the sport in the Netherlands together.

and thanks to @freudenheiim and @amfq for advising me during the process
