A guide to the resources I am collecting and trying to spread the good word on. There’s NorCal specific things, ditto SoCal, immigration assistance in English and Spanish, fellowship and job opportunities for writers and artists, volunteer opportunities to give back to our city. So. I wanted to write a book about America. I wanted to write a book about America and the stories we tell here, about boot straps and the high desert and the Deep South. I wanted to understand these things because in 1996 my mother and I drove from California to Florida, via interstate 10. In the years since, my mother died, and all the questions I had for her — where was she born, how was she raised, what happened to her that set her life on such a disturbed and volatile path — gathered dust. Then, I found her journal, and read in its pages something that sent me back to the 10. In 2019 I moved into a van and once more set out across California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. 2,460 miles. I had questions of who my mother really was, what she had endured, and what about her life only made sense in the dark reaches of this place we call America. Along the way I spoke with strangers in truck stops, artists and border guards, Cajun two-steppers and gator guides, Chiefs and hucksters, and saw everywhere that the stories we tell about where we are from cannot be divided from the stories we tell about who we are. After almost ten years, The 10 is almost here.

I’m honored to be joining the group from @cluejustice and other orgs walking from the Adelanto concentration camp to the MDC, the camp we have smack in downtown LA. 98 miles in hopefully the right socks. Faith walks have a long history in the fight for social justice and I’m honored to be able to witness this one. ❤️‍🔥 by @eahanks

There’s differences between protest and resistance. One is that you are invited to the former, but not the latter.

Obi Wan is not going to come to your house and invite you out on an adventure. Luthan Rael is not going to find you and enlist you in the resistance. This ain’t Paris, bebé. Ditto Gandalf, Video Game Reference, and let’s throw Scottish time travel rocks in there, too.

Your every day life right now is the Jospeh Campbell “Call to Adventure” you’ve been writing about in your morning pages for the past five years. It’s just that it’s really boring when it actually happens. It’s about helping with spreadsheets and driving around to check on vendors and making donations as often as possible. It’s being the Henny Penny crank who talks about the changes you’ve made so that every action can grow. There are no lightsabers. There are no dragons.

At best, there are medium-talent Sorkin ripoffs trying to throw whatever they’ve got into whatever momentum we’ve got. 🙋‍♀️

Some time in the past five years, in all the moments when I’d usually reach for Didion, I was reaching for Baldwin instead. Yesterday, I read something that took me back to a recent video on moral cowardice and a conversation @tad.stoermer and I had over the tamales @_xinaortega so generously brought us. Baldwin invites us to be curious… Are we the baddies?
