Alaska from above.

I have a bad habit of packing my drone for every trip, and then never flying it. Spots like these remind me just how interesting a Birds Eye view can make photography.

A perfect weekend in Colorado’s Wildflower Capitol

Blessed with this sunset from camp on our first night! For once I picked a composition I liked, then stuck with it as the clouds rolled by, and the colors deepened.

Typically my toxic photography trait involves rushing around to capture different angles or scenes, and ultimately ending up displeased with most of them.

Really like how this one came out.

Beaver ponds - these guys were so active. If I was too close to their ponds at dusk they’d slap their tails to scare me off (successfully)

Mount of the Holy Cross

Post night shift jaunt up notch mountain. We got to the trailhead shortly after 7PM, and ascended notch in the dark. There was no moon that night, and the stars were in rare form.

After a few hours of tossing and turning, the alarm went off for sunrise, and my bleary eyes burned as the first light illuminated our next destination- Holy Cross.

@kriddle22 had to wake me up a few hours later to finish the Halo Ridge traverse to summit Holy Cross (14,007) and Holy Cross Ridge (13,850), for an ambitious, but memorable, micro adventure.

Clouds and colors around camp.

Pictures from my first backpacking trip of the year.

Campfires and wildflowers always fill my cup, and the simplicity of daily routine eat, sleep, walk, repeat is deeply relaxing.

Shot all of these on the @sonyalpha 24-70; for the first time I only packed a single lens! My pack still weighed over 40 lbs, is there a name for the opposite of ultralight? taken in San Juan Mountains, Colorado by @eamonolwell

Spent a weekend exploring in Moab 🏜️

Red rock canyons, waterfalls in the desert, and blisters from sand in our water shoes 😅

4 passes, 3 friends, and 30 miles of Colorado’s most stunning alpine landscapes.

This one was the ideal setup for a perfect backpacking trip: Fly fishing, steaks over the fire, and incredible views.

We spent 3 nights on the trail, camping at Maroon Zone, Geneva Lake, and Snowmass Lake. Sunrise at Geneva was easily one of the highlights of the trip. Slightly off the main loop, it made for a challenging day with plenty of elevation gain, but the seclusion, scenic campsites, and excellent trout fishing made it worth every step.

Overnight permits for August to November dates become available on June 15th, highly recommend this one! We went in early September, and were rewarded with mild weather, minimal precipitation, and views of the last wildflowers before fall in the high country. taken in Four Pass Loop by @eamonolwell

Desert Blooms

With an unseasonably dry winter, spring in the high desert arrived quickly, and faded rapidly.

Spent two evenings traipsing around the desert outside Grand Junction in the hopes of photographing some Claret Cup cacti covered in their striking red flowers.

Unfortunately, missed the peak by at least a week. Most of the cacti I found had already bloomed, their flowers past peak and withering.

Found a few stragglers, including some other Western Slope native plants sporting blooms.

Hope you enjoy!

Eat a Peach 🍑

April paints the valley pink with blossoming fruit trees. The flowers appear for a short window, but are a sure sign that winter is coming to an end. They are delicate, ephemeral, and sharply contrasted by Western Colorado’s otherwise harsh, rocky surroundings.

Town can look a little dreary during stick season, but the explosion of pink blossoms signals the return of lush orchards. I can’t wait for longer days, adventures in the mountains, and juicy peaches from the farmers market.

Winter 2026

This one was memorably dry, warm, and busy! I squeezed in 26 days of downhill skiing, half as many as last season, and less than I would have liked.

Winter photography is challenging- numb fingers, shorter days, and the pull of other, seasonally dependent hobbies.

Skiing usually takes precedence. Proximity to lifts, the logistics of traveling to locations with fresh snow, and finding the will to get up and moving in freezing weather made for an insurmountable trio. I did not make it out of bed for sunrise once this winter 😅

I did pick up a new hobby, cross country skiing, which turned out to be a great way to get some exercise. It was especially enjoyable since River could tag along, running and rolling in the snow.

All of these were taken in near my home in Western Colorado, mostly on or around the Grand Mesa. With a few exceptions, these were on iPhone during some XC laps, or shortly after with the drone.

Hope you enjoy looking at them! taken in Grand Junction, Colorado by @eamonolwell
