This latest batch* of Veil is my favourite**, and I'm really looking forward to sharing it at @gatheredhandslondon this weekend. A beautiful resin called Benzoin makes up 1/3rd of the formula***. I've used different types of Benzoin for each batch I've made, and this batch is made with an aged Benzoin from Laos. It's harvested by making cuts in the bark of the Styrax tonkinensis tree. The cuts are made in September, then in the springtime the resin begins to flow out. It starts out white then turns to a deep amber colour as it oxidizes and hardens. The resin tears are collected and aged for 24 months. Wearing it makes me feel like I'm bathing in candlelight. -- *Batch number three ** It's smokier and deeper, closer to my original intention for the fragrance. The eucalyptus and honey facets are just little accents to the resins and musk. ***This is a bit of a twist on the typical ratio of Labdanum to Benzoin seen in an Amber accord. by @early_modern
online orders closed for a little while whilst I I. complete and recover from a studio move* II. prepare Latent Content** for you -- -- -- -- -- * thank you to @ruth.e.paints without whom I would not have been able to move my stuff and would probably just have walked away from it all. ** Latent Content is the name of my next perfume collection. by @early_modern
Materiality = some of the things I used to make the thing Reality = some of the things that the thing might make you think of by @early_modern
I am aware that two posts in as many days is out of character. However, I realised I hadn't really told anyone at all that EARLY MODERN fragrances are now available as a 30ml bottle. 50ml bottles are still possible for the long term commitment people, but 30ml is now the default as it is both very cute and easier to ship to you wherever you are. by @early_modern
Very often I tell people about how I made Life of the Party during deep 2020, dreaming of going to parties. But what I don't usually get enough time to explain is that I don't actually like going to parties all that much. I just really like all the stuff leading up to it, or rather, I just really feel a deep nostalgia for the feeling of the build up to a party. It feels like tapping into a vast shared cross cultural adolescent phenomenon, feeling like your life is going to change, your crush is finally going to talk to you, that everything will be so different and so cool. This is me admitting that I've been a bit harsh when I talk about Life of the Party in the past. It's so optimistic, such a pop music hit, and so linear. Clara!!! Things don't have to be tortured and deeeep to be good. You know pop music is good and very clever. Also you don't have to like going to parties to enjoy the idea of parties. by @early_modern
