On Thursday night we launched the Get Glasgow Moving public transport campaign’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition at the New Glasgow Society 🙌

It’s only on for six days, so please make sure you visit before Weds 23rd September at 5pm! 👇

🗓️ Open every day until Weds 23rd September, 12noon-5pm
📍 New Glasgow Society, 1307 Argyle Street, G3 8TL

It’s been a total labour of love to bring this exhibition together – four days’ solid to install and a whole summer spent sorting through the archives and organising more than 240 photographs, sixty press cuttings, fifty films, alongside many old placards, banners and leaflets to the tell the story of our campaign over the last decade 🚍 🚇 🚆

If you don’t know much about Get Glasgow Moving or just want to find out how I’ve been spending a massive chunk of my time over the last 10 years as the campaign’s co-founder and chairperson – then please make sure you come along!

I’ll be invigilating from Monday – Weds, so come and say hi 😊

We are also selling our popular campaign t-shirts, designed by yours truly, for just £10 – so don't miss your chance to get one 👕

And thanks, as always, to @mr.neil.scott for the wonderful photos!

It was great to meet Paul from @PalFoxPhoto last month when he visited me at @WaspsStudios Hanson Street to take these fab pictures 📷

My studio has always been more like an office than anything else, going back to my very first one in Glasgow in the Barnes Building at @GlasgowSchoolArt from 2008-2010. I bought ‘The Boss’ mug back then as I was interested in the aesthetics of the corporate world and exploring what it meant to be self-employed worker, making pieces like ‘The History of Financial Crises’ (2009), ‘Desk Chair Parade’ (2009) and ‘Desk Chair Disco’ (2011), and the ‘Work-a-thon for the Self-Employed’ (2011).

I’m not making much art these days as nearly all my time goes into local community activism, particularly with the @GlasgowCommunity Energy co-operative which I helped get up-and-running during the pandemic, and with the @GetGlasgowMoving public transport campaign which I co-founded in 2016.

Over the summer I’m preparing for Get Glasgow Moving’s 10th Anniversary Exhibition at the @NewGlasgowSociety, which opens on Thurs 17 September as part of @GlasgowDODF 2026.

I love using my creative skills to further causes that I’m passionate about. Over the years I've designed many campaign materials – including this ‘Trans-Clyde Links You Clyde-Wide’ T-Shirt, which is based on the original marketing for the Trans-Clyde integrated public transport network launched by the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive in 1979, the year that I was born.

The integrated public transport networks which most big city-regions had were wilfully destroyed in 1986 with the deregulation (and later privatisation) of buses. This was one of the most destructive of all Margaret Thatcher’s policies, and it is shameful that the @ScotGov has continued to maintain it for more than quarter of a century of devolution. With the @BetterBusesSPT campaign, we are doing all we can to get our region’s buses back in public control.

If you like the T-Shirt, come down to the exhibition in September and you’ll be able to get one there! And, if you'd like to have a nosey round my studio, I'm also planning to take part in the @HansonStreetStudios Open Studios on Sat 3 October 😊 Portrait of artist Ellie Harrison in her studio at Wasps Hanson Street in Glasgow taken in Wasps Artists Studios by @earlywarningsigns

Ten years ago today, I was just beginning my year-long durational performance #TheGlasgowEffect, which was to become one of the most controversial publicly-funded artworks that Scotland had ever seen.

Part psychological experiment, part protest, part strike, for the whole of 2016, I vowed not to travel beyond Glasgow’s city limits, or use any vehicles except my bike.

I described my experience of starting #TheGlasgowEffect, including being at the centre of the social media stooshie it provoked, in ‘When the Chips Hit the Fan’ – Chapter 5 of my book ‘The Glasgow Effect: A Tale of Class, Capitalism & Carbon Footprint’ published by @LuathPress 📚

We have just printed a newly updated version of the Second Edition, so do have a read if you’d like to be transported back to that moment in January 2016...

The 26 October 1986 was known as ‘D-Day’, when the disastrous policy of bus deregulation was imposed everywhere across England, Scotland and Wales, except London.

It caused chaos, by stripping control over vital bus services away from public bodies and handing it to private companies instead. Since then, we’ve lost millions of miles of routes, fares have risen well above inflation and most parts of the country have been left with an expensive, unreliable and fragmented bus system that does not meet communities’ needs.

But after 40 years of failure, the tide is finally turning against bus deregulation. New publicly-controlled systems are now in place – or soon will be over the next few years – in many parts of England and Wales.

Join our Better Buses National Conference Online Event to hear more about the grassroots campaigns which have led to this much needed policy change. We will learn more about the history of bus deregulation, the campaigners who fought against it at the time, and the devastating impact it has had on human rights.

There will be time for discussion in breakout rooms exploring the progress being made in different parts of the country, sharing skills and providing tips to help you get involved in the fight for Better Buses for all.

An exhibition celebrating ten years of Get Glasgow Moving is currently taking place at New Glasgow Society.

This week I posted some of my photos from their events. And have taken the opportunity to review Ellie Harrison’s journey from artist to activist.

I also reshare a 2012 interview with Harrison I did for New Escapologist magazine.

📸✨ 10 YEARS OF GET GLASGOW MOVING! 🚌
A decade of campaigning, community, big wins, setbacks and the fight for a better public transport system in Glasgow. And now, some of my photographs are part of the story. 📸
It was brilliant to be at the opening of the Get Glasgow Moving 10th Anniversary Photography Exhibition at New Glasgow City.

Thank you to all the campaigners and cross-party politicians who have supported this campaign over the years and helped highlight just how important it is for Glasgow and the wider region to have a better, more reliable and accessible bus network.

From local people and activists coming together in September 2016 to a campaign that has grown into one of Scotland’s best-known passenger groups this exhibition captures a decade of people, places, campaigning and change.
📍 1307 Argyle Street, Glasgow, G3 8TL
📅 On display until 23 September
🕛 12pm–5pm
Come along, see the photographs, learn about the journey and celebrate the people who have kept Glasgow moving. 🚌📸
And yes… keep an eye out for my photographs!

I was delighted to be back in @LpoolCityRegion this week for the launch of @Merseytravel_'s new publicly-controlled bus network 🚌🥳

I staged 'Bus Regulation: The Musical' here in 2022 and 2023 as part of the campaign which led to @MetroMayorSteve's decision to become the 2nd UK city region to roll-out bus franchising.

That's after Greater Manchester, where I staged the first version of the Musical in 2019 🪩🛼

See the links in my bio to find out more!

And follow @BetterBusesSPT to make sure Strathclyde is next 🙏

🥳 Join us to celebrate the first decade of the Get Glasgow Moving public transport campaign at this special anniversary exhibition and discussion event at the New Glasgow Society as part of Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival 2026.

📍 1307 Argyle Street, G3 8TL
🗓️ 18–23 September, 12-5pm
Launch Event: 17 September, 6-8pm

In September 2016, a group of local people got together to launch the Get Glasgow Moving public transport campaign, which has since grown to become one of the most well-known and well-respected passenger groups in Scotland.

Join us to celebrate Get Glasgow Moving’s first decade, as we reflect on the big wins, and some set-backs, which have got us to where we are today – on the cusp of finally seeing a world-class, fully-integrated public transport system rolled-out across our region through SPT’s plans to deliver bus franchising and Clyde Metro.

The opening event will feature a discussion with key activists involved in the campaign’s launch, and who have volunteered their time in fight for better public transport over the last ten years.

Presented as part of the Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival 2026.
