scans of [select] spreads from a photobook I created in a digital photography course my last semester of grad school called Sanctuary (2024)

This was an extremely challenging/confronting class and assignment for me. Up to this point, my imaging practice mostly consisted of portraits — of myself, friends + family + beloveds alike, familiar sitters. In our first few assignments, we were tasked to go out and make photos, of anything, anyone. I love life and its beautiful things, and I love imaging people the most out of all the beautiful things/beings; however, I found myself stuck documenting the backs of families, children playing from so far away that the intention of the photo — as there faces were — was obscured. Consent, invasion, violation, ownership. Memory, connection, observation, intimacy. Risk. As I am writing this caption, I am realizing I have more words, so I will share more via Substack. But I thank my professor for getting curious about my notions of consent and privacy and the intention [and impact] of our imaging practices, and for encouraging me to move away from fear and towards the heart of the work I wanted to make and share. The second half of the book following the service program was my gentle attempt at opening up and bridging the gap. As I think about how I’ll engage portrait photography [consented to or not], I am left with this question: ā€œWhat good will come of my making this image?ā€ taken in Harlem by @earth2edi

new substack sharing ! in this piece, I talk about my journey with pleasure, sexuality, spirituality and religion, the body, and allllll the things that shape how we think about and live out pleasure in these our blessed bodies.

I hope this sharing encourages you, as it encourages me, to take your pleasure SERIOUSLY !!!!! Lean in, indulge! Bask in the sun! Whine in the mirror! Kiss a friend, hug a tree! Commit to your pleasure!

Ganja & Hess (1973)

Bill Gunn….. WOAH. I watched Ganja & Hess for the first time last night because it’s leaving Criterion this month. I still haven’t wrapped my head around all I experienced/witnessed; there were several points during the film where I asked myself ā€œwhat the fuck am I actually watching rn?ā€, more time in the best ways. I desperately need to hit my film journal. This was one of my favorite scenes from the film. It reminded me of altar calls when I was still a practicing Christian and how palpable Spirit felt then. I’m unsure if we were invoking Christ/the Christian God, but something certainly was calling me forward. I felt that same calling forward vicariously through Hess. Social conditioning, group think/feel, whatever it may be, it moved me.

Christianity as a Black spiritual, religious, and communion tradition has been top of mind most of my adult life and more recently after I made a photobook about Black churches in Harlem. Our relationship with this spiritual practice is so interesting to me. And because, (despite allll the beauty in our Black existence) there is sooo much horror fuel in our past and present related to religion, this film was a very interesting watch. I typically HATE horror, but this was disturbing and compelling and Black as hell. And although I didn’t expect a focus on Christianity and the church, it (in its being Black as hell) makes a world of sense.

And technically, shot so so well. Dynamic, off-putting, just so well done. So good and must watch again! by @earth2edi

sharing from my TikTok:
This past Saturday, 1 was able to witness the exhibition Momma Loves You at one of my favorite galleries in New York/ Harlem, Health Gallery. Recently, from a performance that my friend Sophia performed in called Matriarch to this exhibit, I have been musing a lot about the women in my life and how they have held and kept me up ā€˜til today. I would not be alive today without the love and care Black women have shared with me throughout my life -family, friends, and strangers alike. This exhibit featured incredible artists of various mediums and disciplines, with works that spoke to Black femme communion, community stewardship and caretaking, Black women’s central role in Black liberation movements, the labors of love that we tend to adopt and carry on (sometimes by choice, often by force), and so many other themes. We are truly so special and so divine. I love us so bad !!!!

My favorites were definitely Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper’s found objects work, Laura Gadson’s quilting work, and Christina M. Tapper’s collage work; it’s so hard to choose, though!!!

There were also works by Madge Scott that I didn’t end up getting footage of, but also so beautiful. Their portraits convey how much beauty there is in being a Black woman. And Destiny ā€œDesiā€ Swoope! We are so amazinggggg. šŸ¤Ž taken in Heath Gallery by @earth2edi

although I would have loved for the audio in the videos to remain bc they are so transporting (I felt like i was in my home/aunty’s home, sinking my fingers into the carpet, my father’s large mahogany sound system, deep in comfort !), this song is really fitting for my reflections today.

I was flipping through witnessings in my camera roll and, in an effort to be more critically engaged with my living (past n pres), felt I should speak to/chronicle how seen I felt and feel when engaging and enjoying Mickalene Thomas’s offerings. I have a postcard of hers from a dear friend who recognized a through line in both of our practices/living — a reverence for Black womanhood and femme being and life building (both ours and all those around us). The way she reflects herself and her beloveds in her work is something I’ve centered my practice in; much of my visual work features childhood/formative year friends, my family, or my self. I want my beloveds, many of them Black femmes, to be celebrated and reflected and recognized and thought of and centered. And as a fellow Aquarian multidisciplinary artist, I admire how many different ways she has been able to embody our experiences, to a T ! You feel it, recognize yourself in it ! All the materials and mediums she uses, so intentional and thoughtful; I particularly love her use of sequins (yes glamorous embellishment) and spatial evocation.

Whenever I start to get self-critical or dispirited by my living and creative practice, I like to reflect on my resonance with her own practice. My creative practice is my living, it’s an actioned altar to all the things I love (see altar reference in deck). When I remember this, I am grounded and no longer caught up in the push for production and having something to show. I think, as someone who is more and more trying to step into offering and visibility, it is important to have a growing and consistently tended to body of work; however, I recognize that my practice is MINE. I release expectation and recommit to the goal of documenting the existence and experiences of myself and my loved ones/things. The hows and the whats and whens will come; I just want to be here and do my things. by @earth2edi
