I thought it important to follow up on my last post about plastic waste in Nigeria and take a moment to reflect on solutions. We’ve already looked at the scale of the problem, from everyday swaps to community clean-ups and systemic gaps, but the real question is: what can we actually do?

Initiatives like Lagos’ Blue Box Programme are a perfect example. By giving households bags to separate recyclables and linking them to accredited collectors, it turns ordinary homes into part of the solution. Supporting local recyclers like Wecyclers, encouraging schools and churches to recycle, and advocating for policies like Extended Producer Responsibility show that change isn’t just personal, it’s collective and systemic.

If you haven’t yet, check out the full post breaking down individual, community, and policy solutions and how they all connect. And if you want to start taking action today, you can sign up for the Blue Box Programme here: https://www.lawma.gov.ng/blue-box-programme.

Plastic waste is overwhelming, but when we combine small personal steps with community initiatives and systemic change, solutions are possible. ✨♻️

♻️Plastic Waste Infograph♻️

Hey EarthBound fam, we’re so back for the summer!!!💚🌱✨ Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about plastic, how much of it we use without even noticing, and how little of it actually gets managed once we throw it away.

In Nigeria, we generate over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, but less than 12% of it is recycled. Most of it ends up burned, dumped, or flooding our cities. And it’s not just an environmental issue; it’s a health and equity issue too.

This post is a breakdown I’ve been wanting to do for a while, to look at where plastic waste really goes, why it matters, and what’s already being done (or not) to address it.

Tackling this problem will take more than lifestyle swaps, it calls for long-term infrastructure, community-driven solutions, and policy that meets the scale of the issue.

Earth Day is more than just a date, it’s a testament to the fact that this planet is all we have 🌍. Since the very first Earth Day in 1970, voices united to demand better, sparking major wins like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. Even in 2016, it was Earth Day that brought the world together to sign the Paris Agreement, committing to hold global warming well below 2°C.

And this year, the call is just as urgent. The 2025 theme Our Power, Our Planet reminds us that we aren’t bystanders, we are the solution. The goal is to triple renewable energy generation by 2030, tapping into the abundance of solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and tidal power.

The coldest corners of our Earth once reflected sunlight like mirrors, balancing our climate, but those mirrors are melting faster than ever. Our power lies in how we respond, in the energy we choose, the habits we build, and the conversations we ignite.

Because Earth Day isn’t just a day; it’s a call to show up for the planet, today and every day 🌍✨💚.

Hey EarthBound family, it’s been a while, but we’re so back! 🌍💚Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about sustainable agriculture and its importance for Nigeria. Despite having rich soil and hardworking farmers, we still rely too much on food imports, struggle with climate challenges, and lose crops due to poor infrastructure. If we invest in climate-smart farming, better storage, and local food production, we can create jobs, protect our land, and secure a future where Nigeria feeds itself. It’s possible, but we need real action! Swipe to learn more! 🌾💡🌱✨

🌱Greenhouse Effect Info Graph🌱

After a brief break, EarthBound has returned, revitalized and more captivating than ever before! We are thrilled to kick-start this revival with an insightful infographic shedding light on one of the most relevant geographical phenomena influencing Nigeria's environment today: the green house effect🌍

Climate change in Nigeria is exacerbating environmental and socioeconomic challenges, with extreme weather patterns intensifying dry seasons and shortening rainy seasons. Desertification and unpredictable rainfall are rendering lands unproductive, leading to crop loss, displacement, and food security issues. These impacts have escalated resource conflicts, particularly between farmers and herders, disrupting the country's stability and economy. Urgent action is necessary to enhance food and economic resilience and prevent further crises.

Today is Global Recycling Day, a day to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and reducing waste. Recycling not only helps conserve natural resources and energy but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and keeps our communities clean. Let's make every day a recycling day by reducing our waste, reusing what we can, and recycling what we cannot. What have you recycled today?

The 26th of January is recognised as World Environmental Education Day. Its main objective is to identify environmental problems on a local and global scale and to increase awareness of the need for engagement in environmental protection and conservation, thereby reducing the various degrees of effect brought on by climate change.
