Today was the final day of our Field and Woodland Found summer school @blackshed with @brockmanpage and I was having a go at wood carving. I did pop home at one point to char the surface of my finished piece, but am pleased how it came out. I’ve really featured hornbeam, it’s so fundamental to our farm.I also popped the starting point for my sculpture on top of- the little bit of rusty iron pipe I found under a tree that looked like a flame, along with the replica bloomery and the ironstone block.#materialculture #contemporaryart #weald #foragedartsupplies by @earthstonefireuk

Day 4 @blackshed and assemblage in full flow. I used a deep red iron stone pigment for painting my hornbeam post and inserted it into the charred oak block. This was my first attempt at basketry, and with @brockmanpage suggestion I left it green, so built a separate replica iron bloomery to go alongside, using hay I gathered from our fields this morning, and clay I dug last summer for my @aceagrams DYCP project.#wildclay #materialculture #foragedartmaterials #contemparyart #landbasedart by @earthstonefireuk

Today at our workshop @blackshed I discovered why it’s not recommended to use seasoned hornbeam for green woodworking. I got there eventually though, and haven’t quite got the blisters to show for it, but it was close.With a little persuasion I put my idea onto paper so that @brockmanpage was able to see what I was rambling about, and then I took the pieces home and set fire to them. I always set fire to them.I will be doing something fun with clay tomorrow as this piece all about ironworking starts to come together.#materialculture #shousugiban #landart #contemporayart by @earthstonefireuk

Today’s session @blackshed with @brockmanpage was all about wood - green woodworking, cleaving and shaping, wood carving and woodblock printing.The theme of iron is coming through in my work - from the ore in the clay, which was historically smelted both here and on our farm @glottenham_castle and which fires a bright red, to the hornbeam - which is also known as ‘ironwood’ which was first planted commercially in the Weald by the Romans for its fantastic hot charcoal. #woodlandcrafts #handcarved #wildprinting by @earthstonefireuk

MOTHER TONGUE by Emma Salmon, Lara Hailey & Holly Dawes is currently on show here at blackShed - last day is Saturday 18th July! A big thanks to Robert Sample for filming as we did a little walk through at the end of last week, picking up on some of the elements of this jam-packed and immersive show that I find particularly intriguing. The Mari Lwyd -inspired H-kkus Gh’el as you enter the space, the spotlight on mothers, matriarchal history, animals and material history - areas that can be so often overlooked but are increasingly important to highlight and value! A beautiful afternoon spent creating personal stories to carry home with us. Participants brought small items of memory, they burned and carved and wrapped and constructed pieces which told a story.@blackshed took some photographs and I remembered to take some more. Mother Tongue is on for another week, so there's still time to come and see it. @blackshed Robertsbridge Working towards this exhibition has been such a rewarding process. It was a genuine joy to collaborate with @larahailey_ and @earthstonefireuk . From the beginning, everything felt generous and in flow.Although we each made our own work inspired by the theme of ultra-conserved words, we developed the exhibition collaboratively—sharing ideas around colour, imagery and the relationships between our pieces. I created three coiled vessels alongside a series of shrines that we all contributed to filling.When it came to curating the exhibition, it felt as though we were aligned. We all wanted to honour each other's work and create a space where every piece could be seen in its best light. No one was trying to be the loudest or the most visible.It's been a real privilege to be part of this project.If you haven't seen Mother Tongue yet, there's still a little time. by @earthstonefireuk

Old Mother TongueOld Mother Tongue explores the deep relationship between language, ancestry and the enduring presence of the feminine. Constructed from weathered wood, fibre, found objects and symbolic marks, the work suggests an ancient figure who has carried words, stories and memory across generations.
