Connected Appalachia working together with a belief that human and environmental dignity are interlinked.
Current Projects: Resisting Google in SWVA
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
EAST, and other members of the public, have been flooding the US Army Corps of Engineers with public hearing requests over Project Raspberry (the proposed Google Data Center Campus in Botetourt County), since March of 2026.

We, and several other organizations concerned about data center development, sent a formal request for a public hearing to the USACE this past Friday. Thank you SO much to those supportive co-signers and for the amazing coalition building.

What YOU can do:

Request for a local Public Hearing over Project Raspberry - find guidance on this in previous posts/linked in our bio

Get Involved - help us prevent data centers and their potential environmental impacts in Appalachia by becoming a member of EAST

Links to the membership sign-up form and help with letter writing are in our bio 🪲 by @eastcoalition

A special thanks to Charlie Alphin (Botetourt farmer, veteran, and active community volunteer) for sharing this story, in his own words, about a data processing center in the Town of Buchanan.

@ltgovhashmi visited Roanoke on the last stop of the Energy Costs Listening Tour over the proposed Dominion and Next Era merger.

Next Era is a primary financial partner in the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Dominion is a partner in the proposed Joshua Falls (Concord/Lynchburg) to Yeat (Culpepper) Valley Link Transmission Line project. Dominion cites the merger to create 54 GW of electricity for data center projects. The majority of the costs for this infrastructure fall on ratepayers (us, you and me). Thousands of acres in VA are at risk.

Here, we’ve put together some info on the proposed energy consumption of Project Raspberry and the utilities that come with it.

🥧 We had such a great time this past Sunday at our third Circle of Protection: Eastmont! 🍏

We'd like to thank Doc Polys, Gwyneth Homer and our pals at @powhrcoalition for making it such a wonderful program, and everyone who pitched in for a **stellar** potluck meal – as well as a host of great local musicians who provided some great pickin and singin around the song circle!

If you missed it, no fear! We'll be gathering again on Sunday, October 18th at the same location in Shawsville from 2-5PM for another afternoon of food, music, community and solidarity!

RSVP at the link in bio / below!

Thank you Eastmont Circle of Protection @powhrcoalition @artivism_virginia for feeding our souls and bellies this past Sunday. For those who missed it - don’t worry. The next circle is October 18th from 2 PM - 5 PM.

Our fights are interlinked, and so are we. Like @catherinethegreatmusic said: “We don’t need your data centers, your damned Al, or the *fracked gas pipelines and compressor stations* to power them!” See yall next month!

Last Spring, a lot of us asked the U.S Army Corps of Engineers for a public hearing over Project Raspberry, the proposed Google Data Center Campus in Botetourt County, Va.

Since then, more people know about this project. See “what has come out since April 9” for a fraction of that gained knowledge. Our community, the land, deserves to be heard!

New letters can help us get a public hearing with the Corps. Provided here, is guidance on that process. Reach out if you need support/the pdf via messenger or east.ops@proton.me

Share this post if you plan on asking for a public hearing!!!

Facilities this size draw millions of gallons of water and enough electricity to rival a small city. The pressure lands on local watersheds, the grid, and ratepayers.

We had a grand time with @eastcoalition tonight at the @fincastlefire Community Room learning about data center pollution and the irreversible harm this project would do to our beloved Greenfield in Botetourt County. Go to @eastcoalition to find out how to leave a public comment and write a letter to the @usacehq to fight this awful data center proposal and preserve the protected habitat in Appalachia!! #nodatacenters #botetourt #fincastle #dalevilleva #folkmusic by @eastcoalition

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE BEAUTIFUL BIRDIES

Tree Swallows are often seen at Botetourt’s Greenfield. These migratory birds feed on insects near wetlands and nest in tree cavities. Similar to other obviously present species at the Greenfield Site, the Tree Swallow was omitted from Google’s applications for government permits to impact the wetlands during the construction of their dirty hyperscale data centers. They exist, we exist. The tree swallow is EAST’s logo. Permission to impact Greenfield wetlands has NOT been granted.
