We are a hunter, fisher, farmer & Tāngata Whenua led conservation project between Opotiki and Gisborne focused on restoring Whio across the region.

Who is Eastern Whio Link?
.
Here is a little story about why and how we started…
.
We are a hunter, fisher and Tangata Whenua led project…
.
Our goal is to bring Whio back to such abundance that we have a connected population right from Te Urewera to the East Cape.
.
We are also working towards healthier ecosystems that support not only our native biodiversity but our mahinga kai species as well.
.
Since the project started we have found Kiwi, bats, native frogs, Raukumara tusked Weta, Kākā, Pōpokotea, MiroMiro, Toutouwai, Karearea and other incredible creatures that we have folded in to what we do.
.
It’s not just about conservation. It’s about supporting our communities to be in the ngahere and to have a strong relationship with the land.
.
It’s about understanding the impacts of our actions, particularly identifying how we can improve our ecosystems through our relationships with food.
.
When the Ngahere thrives, we thrive as a people.

A) It’s a young male waiting to set up its territory.

B) It’s a mature male guarding a nest of eggs that are due to hatch any day now!!!

Some of our attendees on our @easternwhiolink Tane weekend at @journeysendstation had aspirations of learning to use a hand piece…

Being ever accommodating @stujefferis got into teaching mode and we got stuck in.

That’s what community is all about. Working side by side to bring each other up.

This Tane weekend was all about mental health and working side by side as part of a community and learning together sure makes a fella feel supported in life.

And when you feel supported in life by being a part of something it goes a long way when it comes to mental health.

Well that’s what we reckon anyway.

Did you know your traps don’t come out of the factory springing off at the right weights?

Here on @easternwhiolink as part of our Tane Weekends supported by @leading_from_the_land we teach our volunteers how to adjust traps to the ideal weights to catch stoats. It’s all part of being a great little conservation project.

As part of @easternwhiolink second Tane weekend we did a Tuna workshop with Uncle Kira and Uncle Ruka.

Harvesting Kai and preparing it is a key part of establishing a relationship with our ecosystems.

They say the difference between conservation and kaitiakitanga is that conservation manages land. It keeps the ecosystem at arms length and manages it.

Kaitiakitanga treats people as part of that ecosystem and focusses on relationships that bring about abundance. Mahinga kai is part of that relationship and it’s a model that we believe benefits both the ecosystems and the people that engage in the @easternwhiolink project.

A huge thanks to @journeysendstation for hosting us and @leading_from_the_land for funding our Tane weekends.

Sausage making and advanced butchery was part of our second Tane weekend.

We listened to our community and many of our volunteers wanted to learn how to make sausages.

And while the mechanics of the sausage machine made for some questionable hand motions what we do know is that when men work together side by side doing something productive some of the best conversations are had.

That is our approach to preventative mental health on @easternwhiolink

It’s all about building community, building skillsets and having a great time while we are doing it.

On our second Tane Weekend one of our focusses was advanced butchery…

The feedback from our community was that men’s mental health is often enhanced by a sense of community and purpose and that some of the best conversations and connections happen working side by side.

That’s why we chose to focus on building up our skills as providers on Tane Weekend number 2 at @journeysendstation

This weekend we co-hosted another tane weekend here at Journeys End Station! Vibes were high, plenty of good laughs and a lot of learning. This time the men were taught about; how traps work, how to use traps, how to fix traps, crutching and shearing sheep, how to break down the meat of a sheep and deer from the get go, making sausages, setting hīnaki traps, spearing eels, all about eels and lastly smoking eels. Massive thanks to @easternwhiolink and @sam_the_trap_man for organising and hosting these amazing weekends. Also a huge thanks to @racheljefferis for catering for everyone and making sure every one was fed. Thank you to everyone who helps makes these weekends happen! We had another great Tane weekend @journeysendstation focussed on Rural Mental Health.

What we know is that men often have their support network in the community they do things with. We are well when we are out there doing things together with our mates who we can just be us with.

When we are actively doing side by side we sometimes have our most open conversations.

Thats why with our Tane Weekends supported by @leading_from_the_land we focus on learning new skills together.

We all have different skills and areas of knowledge and within each rōpū there are times when each person teaches and shares skills and at other times learn.

Thats what it’s all about for us. Addressing mental health through community and learning together.
