Did you know that Colonel David Mulford was the first person on Eastern Long Island to receive a copy of the Declaration of Independence - 250 years ago today? 🤔📜

When he read it to the soldiers in his militia regiment who were gathered in Southampton, it revolutionized what they were doing. 🪖 No longer were they merely involved in a colonial rebellion, these farmers, fishermen, and tradesmen were helping to found a new nation. 🇺🇸

Pictured here is the actual copy of the Declaration that Mulford received. It’s now owned by a private collector who has loaned it to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. 👏 by @easthamptonhistory

The recently released film of 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑂𝑑𝑦𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑦 features the cyclops, Polyphemus. 👁️ Come for a special tour of the Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran Home and Studio this Sunday, July 26 at 11 a.m. to see how Thomas Moran depicted Polyphemus in a painting that hung in his East Hampton home during the late 19th and early 20th century! 🖼️ The painting, 𝑈𝑙𝑦𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝐷𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑦𝑝ℎ𝑒𝑚𝑢𝑠, is exactly as he displayed it in the Studio.

You’ll also learn how Moran’s portrayal of Ulysses and Polyphemus was inspired by J.M.W. Turner, the acclaimed British painter. 👏

A capacity crowd was on hand in the Baldwin Room of the @easthamptonlibrary as Sean captivated the audience with how and why the American Museum of Natural History decided to collect a right whale skeleton from Amagansett in 1907. 👏

ABOUT THE TALK: The Rev. Thomas James: beloved minister of East Hampton’s first church—or Christian nationalist zealot? Between these extremes existed the man who came to the New World in search of religious freedom but found that freedom was not enough. Friendly with his indigenous neighbors and at odds with the colonial authorities, Thomas James’ vision of Christian Nationalism challenges us to reject the narrative we’ve received and reconsider the man whose faith defined a community and ultimately landed him behind bars.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: The Rev. Jon D. Rodriguez is the Pastor of The First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton. His love of history brought him to First Church, which was founded in 1648 as one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in the nation. When he isn’t serving the church, Jon is enrolled in a doctoral program through the University of Edinburgh and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where his work focuses on the theology and worship of the Reformation.

In 1907, the largest North Atlantic Right Whale ever recorded was hunted off the coast of Amagansett, making headlines across New York and becoming an iconic chapter in East Hampton history. 🌊 Discover how the whale's massive skeleton made its way to Manhattan and why its story continues to captivate more than a century later.
