One of my favorite underrated spots in Rochester, NY are the gardens at the George Eastman Museum. 🌿🍂

The estate has multiple gardens and green spaces, with beautiful pathways, flowers, landscaping, and tucked-away corners that make it feel like a little escape from the city.

And honestly, Fall is such a beautiful time to visit. 🍁

If you’re planning a Rochester, NY fall getaway, add the George Eastman Museum to your itinerary and give yourself time to wander beyond the galleries.

Luis González Palma is interested in the intersection of perception and power as it relates to photography.

His past works have investigated this theme through portraits exploring indigenous and mixed race identities in Guatemala from the colonial period to the present. “La Mirada Critica,” which translates to “the critical gaze,” plays with the historical practice of measuring indigenous people for study.

While most of the image is sepia-toned, González Palma has left the eyes white to intensify this gaze, imbuing the sitter with a sense of dignity while also speaking to our continual implication within the power structures inherent to viewing images.

Gag moves. Gag is visceral. Gag catches in the throat. A laugh. A retch. A joke. A bind. Pleasure and pain. In the hands of artists, it offers a means of grappling with contemporary experience in a tragicomic mode.

“GAG” at the George Eastman Museum proposes a bold new framework for understanding twenty-first-century photography and video.

Experience the exhibition, on view in the Main Galleries through April 11, and explore what gag means to you ✨

Against the backdrop of Augusto Pinochet’s violent military dictatorship in Chile, artist Mario Fonseca made photographs in a conceptual mode.

The adoption of conceptualism among some Chilean artists during this period was in part facilitated by its seeming unintelligibility, which often helped artists avoid government persecution. Fonseca’s “Habeas Corpus” series features self-portraits that have been obscured in different ways—a critique of state surveillance and political censorship.
