Ephemera is a sustainable furniture project that transforms corn husks from Northeast China as part of modern, handcrafted pieces for rural boutique hotels.
Constructed using locally available agricultural metal working technology, the furniture exploits simplified production processes, enabling local farmers to use existing tools and to begin to create an income for the winter months.
Reusing this biodegradable agricultural waste reduces pollution from burning while celebrating the region’s cultural identity.
Ephemera reveals the overlooked beauty of rural materials, reimagined through minimalist, contemporary design. With strong community support, the project proposes bridging environmental awareness and cultural continuity. Each piece becomes more than a functional object—it tells a story of transformation, resilience, and place.
Ephemera invites reflection on sustainable living, regional heritage, and the deep value of materials often ignored, offering a quiet yet powerful design rooted in care and context. taken in Central Saint Martins by @easywangw
